Congratulations @Clockless_hours

What time did you receive the email?

7:13 their time.

One of the new admission prompts is a 100 word short story. I’ve always struggled with fiction…oh well

Congrats!!

Hi,
I’ve been lurking here for a while now and didn’t want to post until I knew the results. I got in and I’m excited to see some of you there in a couple of weeks.

I guess all of those who got their email about 19:00 got in… and all of us who have yet to receive notification are going to be rejected :face_with_head_bandage:

Nonetheless, I would like to say that I’m proud of each and every one of you for undertaking the application process - it has been a challenge and it has been great to do it alongside all of you.

My next steps are going to be to apply to Outer Coast, Thoreau College, and other similar institutions - if any of you wish to join me feel free to shoot me an email at t.walshdaniel@protonmail.com

Also those who have made it into the second round, I’d love to hear what your experience is like in the valley - keep us posted!

Really? Right now it’s 22h30 in Deep Springs and I’m still waiting in despair since yesterday 🥲
Any updates guys?

@ginga I still haven’t got a reply either. I can only imagine its because they’re either still choosing one or two final applicants before rejecting all the others or that they decided not to inform those rejected this year which would be strange :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

BTW @ginga since you were waiting since yesterday. does that mean you’re an international applicant too? Perhaps they haven’t sent decisions to int. applicants yet - it’s just a theory but DS has been known to have quotas to fulfil in the past

Yes I am, can you share more about the quotas you mentioned?

For example, the class of '18 was 75% women or so I’ve been told by alumni. The reason behind this was to even out the man:woman ratio.

Basically, the Telluride association told DS that they would revoke funding if they did not meet a certain quota for women for three consecutive years. I’ve been told that the quota requirement for women ended last year (most likely because it was difficult to identify gender non-binary applicants), but there probably remains a quote for international students and students from the US.

Additionally, a previous member of Apcom posted somewhere else that the incoming class of DS isn’t so much about how good of an applicant you are personally, but rather how well you mesh with other prospectful applicants. This would mean that there are probably quotas for diversity, however, whether or not they are conscious or unconscious is a different matter.

After all, DS openly claims that “there is no single type of student that we look for, nor any single criterion that we use in making decisions”, however, as human beings we must also acknowledge that this isn’t entirely true. There are socio-economic factors that motivate Apcom to choose certain individuals (think funding), and since Apcom chooses the next batch of students, they also have a subconscious bias to choose people they view they will get along with - not necessarily those who will excel in pursuing a life of service.

But can you blame them? After all, if you were Apcom, you’d probably have a certain type of person in mind (consciously or unconsciously) who you would want to spend the next year or so living together with, right?

Exactly, therefore I never blame them nor myself for any upcoming result since I fully understand that it’s not because we are not good enough, but it’s because we don’t fit to their criteria.
Btw I just want to shout out to you @dracollavenore, you are probably the most passionate Deep Springs applicant and I do wish you to receive the acceptance letter from them this year.

Thanks @ginga :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Unfortunately, I just got rejected, but… well - I don’t really know how I feel at the moment. I want to say something encouraging but I think I’ll just go eat a big bowl of ice cream now and sort of get through this in my own way.

Honestly, it sucks - it sucks a lot. But tomorrow is a new day and it won’t hurt as much as the next few weeks pass by. I’ve just got to keep pushing through.

I’ll have something more to say tomorrow, but for now I just want to wish everyone congratulation not only for those who have been invited to the valley, but to those who took the time and put their heart into their applications.

I’ll see you soon :v:

I got rejected too. Asking them for feedback.

Hello everyone! If you’ve made it to the second round, please pm me.
