You guys can send email to the academic Dean at academics@deerfield.edu. My understanding is that if you get transfer credit, you don’t need to repeat history.

xxDAxx, Science requirement is 2 years of science so physics is not required.

I’m not Dean Warsaw, so take the info fwiw.

Dorm answer: Students are assigned rooms (80%+ are singles) by the school. Returning students get to give a short list of their preferences and these are “considered”.

DA works very hard to balance each house and each floor. This balance has to do with background, interest, home location, etc. This is done for balance on many fronts. Yes some houses are newer than other, but even the “worst” one is better than any college dorm room that I have seen.

Decisions are revealed in late August, thus not giving a lot of time or room for change. Change typically only happens in extreme situations. Though my d didn’t initially love her placement, she has come to see the pros and cons of all houses and all people. From a parent’s point of view it was perfect! They have been doing this for years.

Teens typically will always complain happy or not!

Deerfield has so many electives to choose from. To be able to take a good number of them, one will only have a limited opportunity due to the 5 courses limit. Has any one taken 6 courses and what has been your experience like, is it too much work or manageable by some?

Since you are supposed to take 5 courses, is this like taking, for example, five credits? At my current school you have to take a minimum of seven, meaning like full year courses are one credit and half year are .5 credits, as I’m sure it is at most schools.

If this is like taking five credits, are you given study halls of free periods or whatever?

Most students take 5 classes with 2 frees. A good number take a 6th class in the arts pass fail (eg chorus, dance, studio, drama). A very few take 6 full credit courses - which I think requires permission from the Academic Dean. Students use their free periods to meet with teachers, work on projects, and generally get homework done. Remember each course has a typical homework load of about an hour per night, and your afternoon is taken up with co-curriculars. You need to be extraordinarily efficient to take more than 5 without overloading.

I’m almost certain this has been answered before, but I /really/ don’t feel like reading through 14+ pages.

What’re the dorms like at Deerfield? Are they big or small? Roommates? Are they close to important buildings?

I’m applying to Deerfield, and about 4 others this fall for my 9th grade year (I’m in 7th now) so I wanna make sure I know what I’m getting into :)

The course load depends on the student. You are required to take 5 core classes per term.

My d has taken 6, 7, & 5, fall, winter and spring. She is currently scheduled for 7 in the fall. Personally I feel that 7 is crazy, but I have allowed her to make this decision. (She is a dancer so she always takes dance as a 6th class pass/fail). Her 7th class is usually something that she has a passion for (philosophy, art, etc). I feel that at some point I need to allow my d to find her limit. So I support her decision to “stretch” herself. I keep and will continue to keep a close eye on her stress levels and her ability to balance classes, social life, EC’s and health.

She has kept a solid GPA, so I feel she is ok. This is different for every child.

AlexzMom: Do you need to get the Dean’s permission for 6 or 7 courses? Is it easy to get for freshmen? Out of these classes, how many are AP level? Does your D also play sports and participate in other clubs? I’m just trying to see how much can be squeezed into a 24 hr day.

So I’m really thinking of applying to deerfield but I saw that they gave students macs but the kids had to pay a fee. What if I already have my own laptop but it isn’t a mac I’m guessing I could just use that one, right?
