I am applying to be a freshman, and I have applied to the two above schools. Why two? Well, I started my application process fairly late (mid-Dec.) and it is difficult enough to fill out two in my meager spare time.

About me:

From the Midwest, Asian, wicked sense of humor (...)

Grades:
Trig/Stats- B+ (Had a bad month :()
Adv English- A- (Same bad month!)
Science- A (Get the idea?)
Social Studies- A+ (Hmmm...)
[No foreign language; no spot in class available, but I would like to take German]

Activities:

I play competitive soccer, and my team has won many invitational tournaments. I have an important role on the team. I have volunteered at the famous state fair, and I have taught chess at a camp. Oh yeah, chess. I have been the state K-9 and grade champion for 4 years (in a row!) , but didn't attend this year due to conflicts. I designed our schools recycling schedule in sixth grade, and I "tutor" a 4th grader on Wednesdays. I am also an active certified soccer referee.

SSAT Scores:

Reading-80%
Verbal-92%
Math-97% (Missed one Q)
Overall- 93%
2261 Total.

I would like to hear some feedback on my chances for admission to these two schools. I would also like to hear more on Wyoming Seminary, as I haven't read a lot about them.

Thanks,
amilocated

Oh yeah, I forgot something. I wrote a NHD state-finalist paper.

I also forgot:

School Football (Top team)
School Basketball
Oboe: Honor band 1st Chair (Didn’t make it to state)
Debate team since sixth grade

I am also an excellent speaker, and I write essays with a flowing style. Interviews are to my advantage. :D

How was your interview? What did you highlight on your application? Schools are really looking for what you give to their school. They don’t want lots of well-rounded students, they want lots of students with one main talent (obviously most students would have different talents) to provide a well-rounded school. But if you want to highlight athletics, fill out a prospective athlete form. I know Deerfield has one on their website, not sure about Wyoming Seminary, but if you haven’t gone to the campus yet, try to meet the football and basketball coaches while you are there. And as far as your grades go, a B plus is fine! So is an A-! Grades aren’t what really matters to a school, unless they are horrible. Basically, I think you should just submit and see what happens.

Thanks for the response! My interview is yet to come! I filled out the athletics forms, and the grades are due to one month of terrible scores. Normally they are A’s or A pluses.
I am unable to go to the campus, so my interviews will be over Skype and through a regional representative.

I spent a little time reading some other posts, and I found something to add! I have been asked to join other select soccer teams by other coaches! Will this have any effect, based on the above?

Thanks,
amilocated

You are talking about 2 schools at opposite ends of the selectivity spectrum- Deerfield highly regarded and Wyoming Seminary is several tiers down, they don’t even post average ssat scores or percentage applications accepted. Why don’t you look at The Hill School in PA, more selective, better education and a better student body. They are always looking for bright full pay students.

I realized this. I had one as a reach and one as a “reserve”. Both schools have similar mission statements and philosophy. I applied to these two because they seemed to provide an environment that will suit be well in the near future.

Any more feedback? Info on Wyoming?

If any info on the essays are needed, I wrote two (separate) hooking and unique personal essays, and my short essay for DA has allegorical elements to it. Hope it makes up for my reading score FAIL… :D

Nice SSAT scores. I got a 52% overall (curse math 17%)

Aw, thanks! Don’t worry, this is 52%ile in the top ~90th national %tile. You may just need to show your strengths in your essay, and persuade them WHY you should be picked, even with your “poor” score, as others would put it.

Good luck,
amilocated

One of my strengths (and weakness) : When I decide to work on something, I WILL work even if I have to go to the World’s End AND back to get better. Then again, I have done it few times.

This is one of the reasons I am applying to a prep school. I want to be able to change my occasional effort into a constant effort, and I want to see the results. I don’t care whether I have to start from the bottom, but if given the chance, I am the type of person that will do whatever it takes to succeed. I chase dreams

P.S. My biggest goal in life is to be helpful to others, and a more successful person has more opportunities to do so.

Have u visited either of these schools? It’s common for people to apply to a “likely” school, but i usually don’t see them apply to such extremes of selectivity…

I have visited neither, as it is not possible in my current circumstances (Midwest, “recovering” from vacation), but both mission statements and school info hint at a sense of unity and community involvement. Those two schools seem like places I wouldn’t regret spending four years learning and developing. Also, Wyoming has an apparently PUNY campus (22 acres ?!). Also, the honor band was a state-region honor band, and I am in the most populated region of the state.

Thanks,
amilocated

I have also communicated with the admission reps, and they have been very friendly and easy to communicate with (although one rep kept forgetting to convert from E to C time).

I keep forgetting things: I have been invited to the ODP state program, and since it was a weird year, the invitational tryouts were delayed to the day I took the SSAT. :(

P.S. I have an innate learning ability. I learned 70% of my current Chinese vocabulary (fluent) from watching Chinese TV two years ago. I naturally absorb information when I am not absorbing energy ;).

No it wasn’t, but I ran into it while looking up Wyoming. It was a really really weird coincidence, and it seems pretty sad (sarcastically). Also, the above post is about soccer.

I would not consider Deerfield and Wyoming Seminary that far apart, actually. Deerfield is more selective, but Sem is probably on the next tier. They have over 145 different courses to choose from, a brand new turf stadium for soccer and football (two separate fields). Deerfield is bigger and better known, but Sem has some pretty cool programs as well. It could be a good place to land if Deerfield doesn’t work out.
