Deferment of Admission for tuition

I am still in the mix of deciding between Penn State, UW Madison, and UMass Amherst. I am a US citizen but live abroad so I am not a resident of any state. I am accepted at all of these three, but am considering deferment for one year (all of them allow accepted students to defer their admission for up to one year). The problem is my parents are not nationals, so I can not take the Parent Plus loan and the amount I have to pay (or take student loans) as an out-of-state student is substantial. As I was accepted as an out-of-state student, and I defer admission, work in any of the three states for one full year, pay taxes and get registered with that state’s government, will I be counted as an instate when I enroll the following year into their university? Or they would still consider me as an out of state student because at the time of my admission, I was an outsider?

I couldn’t find anything concrete about tuition related to deferment on their respected websites, so any help would be appreciated.

Do either of your parents work in the military or for DoD?
Part of the problem is that for students 21 and under, they look at where your parents live.

Another option is to look for a cheaper school…e.g. the SUNY colleges are not as expensive for OOS students.

You need to contact each university directly, and ask them about this. If it is possible to gain in-state staus while living there on your own, they will let you know.

Check the thread in this forum by @MTK007 . That advice would be the same for you - except maybe the part about dealing with the twin
