Deferral for strong OOS applicants

Do strong OOS often get deferred to UNC?

With a 4.0 UW/4.4 W GPA, 35 ACT, 5s on 7 AP tests, 780 on 2 subject tests, and strong ECs, am I likely to get deferred EA? If they don’t accept me, I would prefer they immediately put me out of my misery with a rejection.

A deferral would probably be especially painful for me (much worse than a rejection) because my parents don’t understand it is a “nicer” way of rejecting someone. They happily tell their friends about my deferral to Harvard as if it’s a huge honor and it is quite humiliating.

My situation is even worse at UNC because my grandpa is an alumni and donates and my extended family thinks I have legacy even though I’ve told them probably 100 times that they don’t consider grandparent legacy.

So I guess, what are the chances that they will accept me or straight up reject me? I really don’t want to be deferred and have to deal with my family.

They will either accept you or defer you. I suspect given your info, that you will be accepted, but that’s my best guess. And I believe a grandparent or parent counts as a legacy. You sound like a very strong student, and if your essays and ECs were equally strong, you have an excellent shot.
