Deferral Options among B-schools

Hey folks, sorry if this thread has been posted before.

I'm looking at b-schools as a good option for after undergrad, but I don't want to go right into one. I would like to get some work experience, but more preferably, I would like to do something unrelated to the business world - teach in urban schools, conservation work, some feel-good crap that will take a few years off of my time in purgatory.

However, as most b-school applicants spend their time before b-school getting experience in their professional field, I'm aware that I might take a hit when applying to top schools without business experience and a year or two gap since my undergrad. I'm not that worried, because if you spend the time doing something constructive (like teaching) it should look ok. But I don't want to risk anything when the admit rate is around 9% for the top schools.

My college's b-school offers a neat deferral program. Basically, you apply in your senior year and are guaranteed a spot in the school, with up to two year's deferral available. This would be ideal for me, because it would ensure my spot no matter what, so I would be able to do exactly what I wanted to do during those two years.

So my question has two parts:
1) What have been your experiences in applying to b-schools following a year or two of non-corporate work?
2) Do the top schools offer similar deferral programs?

HBS automatically deferrs almost all undergraduate applicants. They also give undergrads the option to deferr if they do decide to let them straight in.
