Deferral Reversal P-ton Style

Well, now that I’ve mourned adequately (splaying my grieving self all over these threads, apologies) here is my plan:

Whip together an art portofolio - although the deadline is tomorrow, the deferral letter said supplements for us poor souls need to be in by the end of January. To put together a quality portfolio will involve Christmas break - not one evening.

I’ll have my GC call my regional rep, and if all goes well, hopefully get in contact with him myself over the phone (at least by e-mail)

Write a killer letter on why Princeton is for me - pull out all the stops.

I’ll have a close friend submit this amazing peer rec she wrote for Dartmouth - it’s very honest but also very flattering

Get in contact with the XC coach as well; despite not being recruited, showing interest even this late in the game couldn’t hurt

Have my best senior year teacher write me a recommendation that emphasizes the current academic year.

Don’t know what else to do - already had 3 teacher recs and a coach rec the first time around! Anyone else have plans, beyond keeping their fingers perpetually crossed for the next 4.5 months?

Best of luck to those still waiting for those letters and congratulations to the class of '09!

3.5, lisae~
Sounds like a plan, btw. Much mor organized than I am. Still don't know what to do yet, but I figure I'll give myself a vacation to ponder.

counts on fingers 3.5! You're right, Zante!

Wow, and I'm hoping to get into Princeton. Oh these hardcore math skills, like simple addition and subtraction... definitely rocking them.

Gracey -

I contaced the swimming coach and he said all recruited spots are full.

Nevertheless, all those ideas sound great. Write another essay, call your interviewer too!

I would never have been a recruit anyway - just someone they take on the team with hopes that I'd be beneficial my junior or senior year, after some intense training.

Do you mean another essay in addition to the letter, like a supplementary essay? I'd be up for that (I didn't do one the first time around, either - greatly regret that).

Thanks, ilcapo! And congratulations, don't have too much celebratory champagne! (Nix that thought - do. You deserve it. :D)

hah champagne + influenza = bad combo.

yes, write a supplemental essay. make it powerful, no light & fluffy ****.

what are your ECs? perhaps emphasize those...?

Oh, ilcap, I just had the must amusing mental image of the bubbles floating up towards your nose but being unable to enter because it was all stuffed up. They were all bouncing off your nose like, errr, bouncy balls? lacks good similie skills at 1 a.m.

Okay, maybe not amusing. But at least a small bit entertaining, don't you agree? Champagne on an upset stomach.... ick. Get well soon so you can have your debaucherous P-arty!

My main essay was about cross-country (and not in the cliched way - I had multipled teachers check this one out for me, as well as a college journalism prof), so I'll grab something else for the supplement one - I'll have to think on it to determine just what.

Thanks for your advice,
<3 <3 K

Maybe ED Accepted Applicants could write peer reviews for some of the star people here on CC. THe people we know really well? Of course, that does seem like it's stretching it a bit, eh?

Gracilisae, it seems to me that you're going a little overboard. You shouldn't send them two more recommendations when you already have four. How did you have four recs anyway? Don't they only allow 2 teachers recs and 1 optional? They're definately not going to read all that. It's about quality, not quantity. Just write a sincere letter yourself to the adcom, and I like the portfolio idea. Don't send too many recommendations. Six letters is ridiculous.

I had 2 teacher recs, a rec from my congressman, and a rec from my principal. So it isn't unheard of...I'm sure I'd be sending in another if I was deferred.

Oh man...the last thing I feel like doing is writing another essay for Princeton...

Zantedeschia: Check out the Echols scholarship at UVa...sounds like a good option, and you don't have to do any extra applications! I think I'll try for that and see what happens....

http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/echols/index.html

This is beyond strange. I'm extremely excited about UVa...is that in any way normal? I'm sitting here talking to my sister about everything we'll do, looking at classes, the whole deal...it's like finding Princeton all over again. =)

lol except just a BIT easier, no? lol i'll check that out, thanks!
Yay UVA~~

I feel so left out, guys, I didn't apply to UVa!! This mass exodus will have to go on without me....

Zero -

I don't care if they don't read any new rec (it couldn't be much different from my teachers from last years') but I am going to send it in anyway for peace of mind reasons. I'll be able to take a rejection in April much better if I know I have been proactive and have done everything I possibly could.

Kat2 - I actually don't mind writing essays; I'm pretty excited about this one! Last shot and all, go down blazing or don't bother trying.........

Good luck, all!

Gracey - Not that I know anything more than you do about the process, but I would emphasize just how much you love Princeton. For example, at my interview I told him that if I didn't get in, I would take a year off and apply again, because thats how bad I wanted in!

Yeah, I'm planning on writing an amazing letter (not begging) emphasizing how badly i want to go and how i would add to campus. i wish i had had a better interviewer, i could tell mine really didn't want to be there... which made it hard to carry on an exciting conversation. he said he didn't have a really good princeton experience.... which of course made it really easy for me sarcasm to talk about how excited i was for any extended period of time.

Kat1---you'll like this. I printed out your "steps for acceptance" and have them on my desk next to the letter. How's that for inspiration?

Someone somewhere here talked about flying over to visit Princeton, and meet with adcoms, professors etc. Not so difficult actually. One is able to get cheap tickets these days during off-peak season. Get into Newark airport, mono rail to Newark Penn station, NJ transit to Princeton jn, and a feeder line train from P jn to Princeton U. After mid-terms in Jan, maybe you can take one of your parents and fly down. Just suggesting that you to keep your mind open on that. Need not mortgage parents' home for the trip.

Are they all the same?

Are they form letters?

I believe so...they certainly weren't signed personally.
