Deferral?

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not I can defer a year from Oxy. I want to take a gap year, and if I do end up picking Oxy, I'm planning on going abroad for a year before coming back for the following year. I couldn't find anything on their website about this, so hopefully someone knows...

You can defer a year. I'm planning on doing that, too, depending on whether I get accepted to the program I applied for.

Here's their deferment policy.

OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE

Enrollment Deferral Policy

Occidental College recognizes and supports the need for some admitted students to take a year off after high school to engage in other activities before enrolling as a first-year student. Such worthwhile activities may include special travel opportunities, work experiences, research, caring for a family member in need of assistance, or pursuing special training.

Upon review of the student’s request, the admission office may grant the deferral for one year (or two years in special circumstances, such as students needing to pursue two years of national or religious service).

The student agrees to adhere to the following terms and conditions for deferral of enrollment at Occidental College:

• The student is required to submit a $600 non-refundable deposit to hold a place in the College.
• The student may not submit deferral deposits or hold spaces at any other institutions.
• The student may not matriculate and/or enroll on a full-time basis at another college or university during the deferral period. However, s/he may take course work to maintain academic focus and for intellectual stimulation. A maximum of two (2) courses will be accepted for credit at Occidental.
• The student may not apply for admission to other colleges or universities during the deferral period.
• The student must notify all other colleges to which he or she has gained admission of his or her decision to defer enrollment at Occidental.
• The student is required to write a letter or email to the Occidental admission office no later than February 1, 2010 to reconfirm his or her intention to enroll in the Fall of 2010.
• If the student is a financial aid recipient, he or she must submit new financial aid forms (FAFSA and Profile) by February 1, 2010, in order to be considered for financial aid.

Thank you! :)
