I got deferred this month, and was wondering if maybe submitting a photography portfolio would help my application come April. However, I'm not sure if my skills are up to par. Would anyone be willing to give me advice on whether or not to send any pictures? I don't even know what "portfolio" consists of physically. Honesty is appreciated, brutality is not.

I personally sent a photography portfolio, but I applied RD. They typically only want a portfolio if your work is well above average. And apparently Yale admissions staff really are annoyed if too many extraneous things are sent - but that is almost purely speculation apart from mentions that extra supplementary material should only be sent if it's truly above average. You should definitely post more examples of your work though or you can PM me if you'd like.

hey,
If you have won photography contests, I'd definitely recommend sending in a portfolio, because it means that you have above-average work. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother because, like Metric said, the admissions people don't like too many extraneous things.
As for the portfolio, I'd recommend about 10 pieces -- perhaps 5 based around one certain concept/idea, and the remaining 5 works just to demonstrate breadth.
I'm into photography as well. I don't know.... how to really evaluate photography, but the photograph has nice detail and tone.... do you have other photographs? The photograph itself isn't too exceptional (just being honest here..), but if you can surround it with others in the portfolio, I'm sure it'd look good.
good luck with everything!!!!! PM me if you want.

The directions on the Yale website specifically say that if you send an art portfolio, it MUST include some drawing samples. I emailed the office to ask them about my photo portfolio, which doesn't include drawing samples (i have never taken drawing), and they said they only want portfolios with some drawing.

Do you mention photography elsewhere in your app, or is it just like "Hey by the way, portfolio!" ? Just wondering, I don't know if it would make a difference.

I'm not applying to Yale, but I submitted a photography portfolio to my colleges, including some Ivies. I agree with those who said that it needs to make sense within the context of your application. In my case, I haven't won any awards, but I've been taking courses outside of school for three years, was featured in a juried exhibition in my city, and am the photography editor of my school's newspaper, so I've obviously invested a fair bit of time and effort. As for your sample photo, I think it's technically very good, but the subject matter isn't too interesting. I'm more into black and white 35 mm, though, so I'm not really one to judge.

In short, if you have a variety of images that showcase your skill and creativity, and it fits in logically with the content of your application, I'd say go for it. Good luck! :)
