Deferred - Will Admissions Let You Change Major?

@jfave76 - that’s ^^ helpful to know as the admissions page for CDes doesn’t mention the possibility of being admitted to a specific major. But that can make total sense given the specific foundational requirements for each area. Can you please list which majors fall under this category? Also, if someone in CDes wants to “transfer” from another major prior to matriculation (ie before they arrive on campus) how hard is that? Do they face the possibility of being closed out of the other major if it happens to be more competitive?

We don’t see a lot of CDes people on the thread so it’s very helpful to have someone who knows the curriculum so well! Thank you for posting!

I changed my major yesterday and got this message when I checked just now- “Your application has recently been updated. We are currently reviewing it and will provide you with a decision as soon as possible”. I had been in between majors (communication studies & sports management) and after sitting down with my parents I decided that Sports Management would be the best fit for me. Super nervous now that the tracker has changed from defer… can’t focus in school! Haha

@JBStillFlying - CDes does not advertise it, but all majors in CDes have different admissions standards to some degree. The most competitive seem to be architecture, graphic design, and product design.
Others may be competitive because they have faculty or facility limitations, like interior design or apparel design. Landscape design is the least competitive and likely has the lowest entry standards. Interior Design and Landscape Design both admit directly to the major. The remainder generally admit to pre-major status with a portfolio review after the 1st year to enter the full major.

Regarding transferring prior to matriculation - that would have to be taken up with admissions. It is not easy to transfer to more competitive colleges once you have matriculated, so I am guessing it is not easy before either. Admissions keeps those processes to themselves. Faculty do not generally have a role in freshman or transfer admissions, only in grad admissions, which are run by each program respectively.
