Definition of Dependent

Hi, I am currently on a F-1 student visa in USA, can my elder sister (21+) come here and assist my stay and study as a dependent?

Thanks.

she can stay, but i don’t think she can study or work on a f-2 visa. and you’ll need the relevant financial documents to prove that she can support herself or you can support her without her having to work…

No…

No.

1) Only spouse & children are eligible to get dependent visas
2) Dependent visa-holders are not eligible to take up paid employment
3) F2 visa holders may not take up higher (college) education
4) Children on F2 visa may take up K-12 education

I’m pretty sure you could gather all this information by just googling.

Thanks for the reply, I know google is my friend.
But I come across some government/law pdf that said dependents include close relatives, thats why I get confused…

Everything I found says that F-2 visas are for spouses and unmarried children under 21, including the USCIC website. Several places explicitly say that “other relatives” are not eligible, though none of them was a government source.

The actual definition of a dependent seems irrelevant here because F-2 dependents may not take college classes full-time or in a degree-seeking status (however, “occasional” college classes for “recreational” purposes are okay). May I ask why your sister does not want to apply for her own F-1 visa?

Its because she had already finsihed her degree and so, and the expenses of another F-1 is not affordable…

If she comes here for graduate studies or language studies (if she wants to improve her English) she would get her own F-1.

I don’t think it is feasible for you sister stay on dependent visa,as you had already on F-1 student visa.It will be only possible if you join a full time job or good white collar job.
