Delaware 2013: Why or Why not?

With the May 1 date fast approaching I thought it might be useful for students who are still undecided to hear from students who have made their final decision to attend, or not to attend, UD regarding their reasons why they made their decision. This thread could also serve as a forum for undecided students to ask any last minute questions they might have about attending UD. So please feel free to share or ask your questions.

My D decided on UD after last weeks Decision Day. Everyone did a fabulous job explaining the nursing program and the pros just really outweighed any cons. We found that UD had everything from sports to Greek life to greatcstudyvabroad choices a beautiful campus and most importantly an awesome nursing program. My D just really felt like she would be happiest here. Up until last week she was really torn between UD, Villanova, Fairfield and Quinnipiac. The entire family is thrilled with her choice and she can’t wait for New Student Orientation! Thanks so much for all of your great tips and advice on UD.

RGKovacs:
Congrats on your D deciding on UD. I’m sure she will get an excellent Nursing education there and will enjoy the many other opportunities UD has available for students. Its sounds like she felt she best “fit in” with UD and IMHO this is one of the most important factors to consisder when choosing a college (obviously not the only factor). Best wishes to her for a successful nursing career. I am sure she will enjoy and ultimately cherish the time she is at UD (although it is going to be very challenging).

My son decided against UD. He felt that it was too big and that he would not get the hands on opportunities that another school offers for his major (Agriculture). Considering the UD is half the cost of the other school, he really wanted to give UD his ultmost consideration. We scheduled a day for him to shadow another student in his major. One of the two classes he was supposed to attend was cancelled and he ended up sitting in Trabant for 3 hours people watching. The other class he did attend had a horrible professor and left a very negative impression on him. I think UD could have done more to make sure his day was a little bit more successful.

All that being said, my daughter is finishing up her senior year at UD and was very happy there. Completely different personality from my son though.

merroz, that’s a shame about your son’s experience. My D is a business major but is good friends with many from the AG school. In fact she even pledged the professional sorority for the AG school. It seems like a small tight knit family group over at the Ag school. Many of my D’s friends have been offered good paying jobs and some of them are still juniors. D is enjoying the opportunites of hanging around the Ag kids. Including milking cows and feeding baby calves. I would have never in a million years thought my daughter would be hanging around the farms but she is loving it. Good Luck to your son, can I ask where he will be going? I have a son that’s a jr, who knows what he wants to do yet so I love to hear where kids choose that don’t choose UD. Not sure yet if UD is a perfect match for him although it is on his radar.

Lefty - my son is going to Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA. It is a very small school with a very strong agriculture and animal science program. My son has been on campus at UD many times, since my daughter attends there, and he said he just didn’t feel comfortable there. The first time we visited Del Val he said “these are my kind of people”. He also said he liked the fact that he would have at most a five minute walk across campus to get to his classes instead of having to take a bus to his classes at UD.

Like I said, my daughter has been completely happy at UD - I think some kids are just better suited for smaller schools. Good luck to your daughter too!

Thanks! funny, I was just at a college fair with my son this morning and noticed Delaware Valley in Doylestown. Yes, everyone needs to find their own school for sure. My son is not sure if UD is a great fit for him either although it seems to be growing on him. good luck to your son! :)
