NO unhooked applicant has a “good chance” at Ivy and equivalent schools. These schools accept less than 10% (some under 5%) of applicants so there are many more well qualified applicants than spots available. Top grades and standardized test scores are not enough to assure acceptance – things like ECs, essays, LORs are critically important to differentiate candidates. These schools should all be considered reaches.
When you develop your college application list you need to honestly assess your academic stats (including GPA, standardized tests, course rigor) as well as your financial needs and apply to a wide range of reach, match, and safety schools that appear affordable (you will have to run a net price calculator for each school you consider) and that you would be happy to attend. You need to expand your horizons and recognize that there are many wonderful schools out there where you can have a great 4 year experience and get where you want to go in life.
Having multiple B’s will not help your application. However, if you have a very strong spike in a different subject (for example, you’ve won national writing awards), a weakness in another subject could be overlooked. It also matters where you stand in relation to others in your class. As I would tell any applicant to competitive schools, make sure you have multiple reasonable matches and very safe safeties.
