Deleting PMs in new format

And frankly, having a mod go through my pm’s to delete them isn’t all that appealing, either.

Again, I am not referring to profile visitor messages.

Private messages have been deletable since I first started here in mid 2000’s.

For those newer to the forum, the little envelope at the top of page, sometimes with a little number in red notifying you of new messages, those are pm’s.

Visitor messages can be found elsewhere.

Perhaps it is stupid of me to expect that we could delete them in the first place, or that if previously deleted on another iteration of forum software. But I did. You might say they are private now. I don’t expect my fellow posters to be able to hack into them.

That is not the point.

Like anything else, we all leave footprints on the internet. Perhaps though, we would like to not leave quite so many. Maybe we sent something to a cyber friend that was so long ago we do not even recall the conversation. Or, simply do not trust those who operate in binary code and selling our data and such to not peep at those stupid conversations.

It is, frankly bizarre to not be able to remove those messages from our inbox. And should have already been fixed by those being paid to run the software. I do not mean those who are volunteering their time, either.

Moderators can’t go through private messages. I was talking about visitor’s messages.

I guess I don’t understand your concern about private messages not being deleted. Why does it matter if the PMs remain, if nobody but you sees them? And fairly quickly, any PMs you didn’t like would fall off the first page, anyway.

I can ask the administrators about it, though.

So if this has been fixed, please let us know and the solution. I will stop venting about it.

I just posted a question about it, but it will probably be Monday before anyone sees it.

The reason you needed to delete PMs in the past was that the in box wasn’t very large. Now the in-box must be infinite, because I have many, many messages.

Why do I care? Really?

That is not really an answer. Does it matter why I care?

Should I just say I am paranoid, and leave it at that? Or perhaps every time I log into my pm box I see a couple hundred conversations are long past their expiration date. Especially now that they are threaded. Maybe we have identifying info in there. Maybe we like little clutter in our lives, including our tech lives.

We have been asking about this particular problem for two months.

ML,
I co appreciate you asking admins about issue. But we thought they had ALREADY been asked when this forum launched with new software.

Yes, exactly. Infinite messages. That is kind of a concern. Will I be looking at those messages until quit coming here?

Just trying to help. There’s not much I can do.

I appreciate your help. Those who help run our forum, like you, are in a tough spot.

Oh come on people…who doesn’t want to go back to line level code…

DEL [drive:][path]filename [/P]
ERASE [drive:][path]filename [/P]

[drive:][path]filename Specifies the file(s) to delete. Specify multiple
files by using wildcards.
/P Prompts for confirmation before deleting each file.
/Q Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to delete on global wildcard

Of course you need the green glowing screen emulator to make it all work :open_mouth:

ML, I appreciate what you do. I know none of this is your fault.

I can answer the why do I want them deleted question. I have received some very, VERY nasty PMs over the years. They hurt- I’m a sensitive person. I had deleted them and forgot about them but now they’re all back. Sometimes I want to go back and look for a message from someone else but I don’t because I don’t want the memories of what people wrote coming back to me just from seeing the first line.

Yeah, it’s petty, but it is what it is. I didn’t want to see them ever again.

Dietz, it all sounds vaguely familiar. But now I am a mac person, so I don’t venture down that path, anymore.

^^^LOL…that is WHY I became a Mac person… <:-P

Exactly. One too many blue screens of death. Once you go mac, it’s hard to go back. I am all mac at home, but sadly, pcs still exist in my work world.

In one of my jobs, I get to troubleshoot pcs for our customers at work. It is a riot how many things can go wrong. And often, totally inexplicable.

Every single forum I have ever been on has the ability for users to delete their own PMs. It’s not like it is asking for something radical. Same as post numbers. I truly don’t understand these forum designers; it seems obvious they have never used forums themselves.

Okay, this is NOT true: “Any message you see on your profile is a visitor’s message, left over from the old site. They were public before and are still public. If you have a bad one, contact a moderator or administrator to delete it for you.” You can now see PRIVATE messages that were sent to people, simply by clicking their user name. I think there was an expectation of privacy…some people use their real names in these PMs, and discuss personal information about their children’s grades, health, etc. And, as others have pointed out, there is no way to delete the PMs. If nothing else, this will have a chilling effect on people. Please, is there anything the moderator can do? Help?

DEFINITELY we can see PM’s. I verified this.

Chiming in here that I would like the ability to delete my PMs permanently. I feel very strongly about this and let down by CC for this development.
