Dell or HP??

I've decided on a PC.. what should I get?? I personally don't have a preference, but I want to get the best deal I possibly can get. which is more performant??

Are you getting a desktop or a laptop?

i will be getting a laptop

From what I understand, HP laptop quality has gone downhill since the merger with Compaq. On the other hand, I've become frustrated with Dell as well. I recently purchased an Acer, and love it. We'll probably get one for my daughter to take to NU.

Some have become dissatisfied with Dell, but in my experience Dell's overall quality as a product is still infinitely better than HP.

Both are okay...
HP = superior customer service
Dell = cheaper prices, superior build

I don't think you could possibly find better configurations than HP's and Dell's. My only choice is as powerful a laptop as possible for a fixed max. amount of money. Since Northwestern students can use academic discounts only for HP- and Dell- assembled PCs, I'll be choosing one of these two.

By far Dell. HP's quality is inferior to Dell. The only laptop companies I would buy from are Dell, Toshiba, Fujitsu, and Sony.

I would include IBM, myself, but only for business-minded types.

Toshiba. Enough said.

if you're looking for higher quality, slightly more expensive "professional" type laptops, ibm thinkpads, apples, and dell latitudes are excellent.

for cheaper but still good laptops go with toshiba or dell inspiron

sony are greatly overpriced

You can get a Dell having same features for half the price compared to other brands.. Look out for 750 off 1500 coupon on the internet, and you can get yourself a great deal!!

how do you get $750 off?? I'm looking at the Inspiron 9300. It's high quality, and its great for entertainment, and because we'll be getting TV through out computers, I figure its a smart move. THere's a general (about) $300 off coupon right now, but the $750 would be nice. Have anymore info?

You might have to wait a few days for the $750 off coupon to come out.. check www.deals2buy.com (Dell section) and www.fatwallet.com (Forums>Hot Deals) regularly... deals2buy.com is updated everyday, so they have it on their site..

I brought my Inspiron 700m (lightest of all - about 5 pounds) for use in class.. It has all the features including a DVD burner.. I brought it for $800 including tax and shipping.. Here's how it looks.. $1512 dell.com price - $750 off coupon - 3% cashback from www.fatwallet.com + Tax on $762 + free shipping.. It's a great deal!!

I believe in the last 30 days that coupon was issued 4 times.. They usually issue it a day before for use on the next day.. It begins at 8 AM CST and generally lasts for 1-2 hours.. :) :)

Just checked it out on deals2buy.. Here's the link to the most recent one.. http://www.deals2buy.com/050606deals.htm.. Another coupon might be issued in a week or so..

When you order, login through www.fatwallet.com (you get a free account) and go to the dell website through them so that you get the 3% cashback.. you can also get an additional 2% discount if you sign up for dell preferred account.. Hope it helps.. :) :)

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a notebook from Dell using a credit card issued abroad? I'm not an American citizen, but as long as I'm able to provide a US address, there should be no problem ordering, right?

way2college, if the coupon I'm entering is already used up, will I be notified before checking out?

i know some of the coupons work only for "special configurations"... does the 750 off 1500 coupon have that limitation too?
Also, you say you can get 3% cash back through fatwallet.com..... then can you still use the educational discount throught NU?? B/c the NU discount is 12%
Finally, I've been looking into them a lot, and Dell is nice b/c of all the options, but also confusing. Anyone have suggestions on specific things we should probably get extra (other than what it says through NUIT)
Thanks sooo much!!!

lorddragon04: yes, you'll be notified..

odie112586: I'm not a student at NU, so I don't know much about their discount program.. There is no special configuration that you have to select while ordering.. You can use the coupon on any system as long as your total is more that $1499 before tax..

If the 12% discount from NU works then the deal would be amazing..

When I purchased my Dell Inspiron 700m, I got a DVD-+RW, and 512 MB memory as well as the extended 8-cell battery..

Get a Sony. You pay a slight premium, but the quality is far superior to that of any Dell or HP.

Sony's are incredibly overpriced and their customer service is horrendous. Stay far far away from Sony's.
