Demonstrated Interest Question

A lot of my friends have told me/I've seen it on CC that UR looks for demonstrated interest.

That'd normally be fine for me, as I live in a different country and it'd be unlikely for me to be able to visit. However, I lived in Rochester for around 8 years and used to go to a very well respected suburban public that sends around 30+ people to UR and many of the "top applicants" use it as a semi-safety. (A lot of my friends' parents actually work there, so they usually get full tuition, too). Anyways, I also worked in the URMC for a summer under a tenured professor.

The problem is that I never expected to move and as such- never visited; I was planning on visiting before my junior/senior year. D: The campus was literally 10 minutes away from where I worked, too!

Do you think this will count against me? I really like Rochester as a city (I <333 wegmans) and want to apply. I am an Intl student w/ Canadian Citizenship, so I know I will get no Need based FA, but I think merit is a possibility, especially if I stay focused the coming year.

Any thoughts/insight would be very much welcome! :) Thank you!

It might help: you lived in Brighton (I’d guess) and now you live elsewhere. That gives you geographic diversity and I would think that it would be a plus that a person wants to come back to Rochester. See about an alumni interview. I assume there’s some way in the application to talk about this.

You can e-mail the admissions counselor for international students - Jon Burdick covers Canada - jonathan.burdick@rochester.edu. Explain to him that you didn’t do a formal visit but are very familiar with Rochester, and tell him your story.

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely follow up with Mr. Burdick as soon as possible. Even if I don’t go to UofR, Rochester is a great city to live in, and I’d love to return and work at URMC as part of the faculty after I finish my extremely lengthy training period  .

Thanks again guys!

He’s also Admissions Dean so contacting him is a good thing.

For everyone else lurking on this thread…

The best way to make a connection with the University of Rochester is to connect with your primary Admissions Counselor: [Counselors Roc World](http://enrollment.rochester.edu/RocWorld/?page_id=4134)

Remember, if you can’t make it to campus for a visit, you might be able to meet up with an Admissions Counselor at an off-campus event: [University of Rochester : College Admissions](http://enrollment.rochester.edu/admissions/events/OffEvents/)

Currently, events through October are listed (November - January events will be added in the next week or so)
