DePauw School of Music Acceptance Rate and Scholarships?

Does anyone know the acceptance rate for DePauw's School of Music?

Does anyone know the average scholarship amount for a music major at DePauw?

That’s really too nebulous a question to answer. In an audition centric admission, it boils down to discipline (performance, composition, music ed, etc), and in the case of performance is further contingent upon number of openings for a specific instrument or voice type, which can vary widely each cycle. Violin, flute, piano and sopranos tend to be the most both numerically in most music programs and tend to be the most competitive pools, but noted faculty on other instruments may also draw larger or more competitive pools.

DePauw also does an academic review of an applicant’s grades and stats before allowing one to audition so unless one is competitive academically, even a very accomplished musician weak academically may not be offered a chance to audition.

Sometimes if you ask about a specific instrument or discipline, the school will provide the data, and some institutions have listed anticipated openings for each instrument in the past. If you can’t find the info within DePauw’s website or common data set you can call the music admissions office and see if they will provide it to you.

General percentages really aren’t that helpful IMO because it can be so instrument, studio, faculty specific each year that unless you have an indication of the level of talent you will be competing against (and a valid means of assessing your skill set within that level), the raw numbers are useless. And any audition based admit is a crapshoot, regardless of the talent of the applicant.

Some of the best info can come from recent applicants and accepted students. Last year’s master list of acceptances http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063231420-post872.html</a> shows some posters with Depauw acceptances. You might want to search for past posts for info, or try pm’ing them for insights.

The best source of info again is within the scholarship webpages of the department or the general financial aid pages. Some schools are pretty specific about listing some of the higher awards (and the criteria), and most will post an average. But again, in an audition based admit, the most talent money goes to the top candidates, so awards are really contingent upon how you end up in the pecking order. There’s some scholarship discussion here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/842453-bargain-scholarships-politely-course.html</a> as general background, and there are also a couple of scholarship amount threads that can be found by searching.

Also, depending on the school, there may or may not be academic merit money based on grades/stats, so a thorough reading of the institution specific guidelines is your best starting point.
