I will be a Freshman at UC Berkeley next year. I have already received my financial aid package. I have a personal bank account that I use to deposit birthday money and other monetary gifts. Can my FA package be changed if I deposit cash into this bank account? Am I required to report this extra cash to the FA office? I would be depositing about a 1000 dollars.

Your 2009-2010 FA package will not be changed because it is based on last years (2008) financial information.

If that 1k is still in your bank account when you fill out FAFSA for the 2010-2011 school year (2009 financial information), then it might decrease your new FA package. However, if you deposit the money this year, but spend it before filling out FAFSA, it will not count.

The amount in your account at the time of filling out your final FAFSA each year is the amount they use to calculate your FA package, and that’s the only time you need to report financial information.

Got it. Thanks.
