Depressed...4 years of work for nothing

To cut to the story this is what' happening righ tnow. My dad's a dentist had about 120,000 dollars saved for my brother (in 8th grade) and I for college. Then my dad (who is 57 right now) invested our college money a year ago in an office because he knew that he couldn't afford to pay for both of us witth that money. So know that money is spent, and my dad says that i have to take out loans and that he can't pay anything until the dental office starts picking up. I understand that and I"m willing to take loans until he's ready to help me financially. To make things worse, my dad's a dentist, and he makes 100,000 dollars a year (not always only for hte past 5 years, he works for the state of NY).

My stats: American born Pakistani, 1380 SATs (730 verbal, 650 math) single sitting, 710 chemistry, 720 math ic, 600 writing, 690 biology. CLASS RANK 25/276, 3.72 GPA out of 4.000 UNWEIGHTED

I'm retaking sats in january (i'll probably end up with 1400 or so, so it will not make a big difference and I cannot retake SAT II writing because new SATs are coming)

I've served over 100 hours in community service, a majority of it in a hospital setting, animal shelter, key club etc and i'm a mamber of NHS and a various number of other clubs 2 sports etc etc

I'm considering not even going to college next year, and even taking a year off because i'd be too emabrassed to go to our community college for two years and transfer afterwards...personal issues or w/e but i just couldn't go to this community college its too bad.

What are my options? I'm applying to SUNY Geneseo, Binghamton, Case Western, Siena, Furman, Ohio Wesleyan after cutting alll other good schools like Emory, Colgate, Brown, George Washington University etc etc.

Please help, I feel like i've been robbed of a good education

You need a good talk with your parents about what your options are regarding colleges and the financing of the education. The state schools are going to cost about $15K a year, and though you may get some merit aid from a few of those schools, you really cannot count on it. Most student loans beyond a few thousand need to be cosigned by the parent. You need to find out what your parents have in mind about college. Do they know that you dropped a number of schools from consideration due to finances?

The other thing to do is to start looking for a job over the holidays and continue parttime through the school year and the summer. Possibly double job in the summer when you don't need to worry about schools, some sort of waitering, busboy job, something with tips. That can net you about half of a state college tuition. Also you may want to include a couple more SUNYs to your apps such as Buffalo and Oneonata. Go over these options with your parents as well.

It's a shame, how did he lose the $120,000? Did he invest them in a bad stock or something? In all seriousness, state schools are not bad, the one in my state (URI) is ranked #2 in Engineering (I can't see how accurate that is, but that's what my mom told me...she could be wrong though). Although I did apply to it, it is not my #1 choice. It is actually a tough school to get into, my HS is #1 in the state and a good 40-50% of smart people from my HS have not been accepted to URI. Although that could be from the fact that we're "In-state" so we get the lower tuition...the school wants to get more out of state people so that they can make more money.

Hey, don't give up. Binghamton is good- it'll get you into med school, if that is where you're headed. Kind of late this year to apply, but if you don't like where you end up, transfer next year. Don't go to community college- you don't belong there. You may get a merit scholarship someplace, too, don't rule it out. You will be in a decent 4 year university next year, that's what counts. Ohio Wesleyan is good, Case Western is, Sienna is.
