I am trying to switch out of Green Quad to get into DeSaussure. I am currently an honors student and that the reason I am switching over. I have also found someone to switch with. I want to know the following from people who lived in DeSaussure or had friends living there or people who know a lot about the dorm:
How clean was DeSaussure? What are the stereotypes surrounding the dorm? Was the Honors Community high in strength? Were there actually more upperclassmen than freshmen? I know its on the horseshoe, but how is it location wise? Is the surrounding area good? Asking about the location because I know the dorm is located on the outskirts of the campus. How large were the rooms?
Please also list any demerits or merits worth noting about Green Quad following the guidelines of the questions asked about DeSaussure above.
Thanks everyone!
The horseshoe is the center of campus. Unless you’re in engineering.
DeSaussure is only for upper classmen
@pbmcdoug Yes, I know that it is upperclassmen, however there were a lot of freshmen this year and last year saying that they were put into Desaussure. I am also an upperclassman. If you have answers to the questions I posted above you can post your answers, but don’t tell me what I can get from the USC housing webpage.
@scmom12 I am not in the college of engineering. Believe it or not, the horse shoe is on the edge of campus for many majors. Personally, I have and will always have classes that are in a more centralized location on campus or towards the gambrel hall/ capstone hall area.
I lived there. To answer your questions:
How clean was DeSaussure? As clean as all of the buildings on the Horseshoe, though I think they may have done some reno work in the last few years. The furnishings are probably slightly older and dingier than those in the Quads, but not substantially.
What are the stereotypes surrounding the dorm? None, though there are some fun ghost stories.
Was the Honors Community high in strength? I think it was all Honors College when I went there, but there isn’t a strong sense of community within the building if that’s your real question.
Were there actually more upperclassmen than freshmen? Yes, the freshman thing must be very new because they never previously allowed them.
I know its on the horseshoe, but how is it location wise? The best feature is access to Main Street. Being on the Horseshoe means you can very easily walk to the Vista and Main.
Is the surrounding area good? It’s surrounded by The Horseshoe, the State House, and the few blocks around the Law School, so yes.
Asking about the location because I know the dorm is located on the outskirts of the campus. I get that this is your perspective, but I find this a bit extreme. I too had classes in Gambrell/Humanities/Close-Hipp and found it to be one of the best spots on campus for access to those buildings.
How large were the rooms? Big enough, but they’re not huge. The Horseshoe is a tradeoff: natural beauty and access to downtown in exchange for some age and slightly less space.
Please also list any demerits or merits worth noting about Green Quad following the guidelines of the questions asked about DeSaussure above. I don’t know Green Quad well, but unless you’re on that side of campus a lot, I don’t see much benefit. The upside of living on the Horseshoe is walking through it several times a day to get to class, Thomas Cooper, the gym, Russell House, etc.
@fleagle10 Thank you so much! Your response really helped.
