S1 did not work his first two years, other than babysitting for my nephews and doing odd jobs for my brother’s in-laws who lived in the same town. The summer between 2nd and 3rd year, he worked at Kroger and was able to transfer to a store in his college town. He had to walk about 6 blocks to and from work, which he didn’t like, and he still kept up his activities in his EC-heavy major. It was also his first semester living off campus and, not surprisingly, his grades dropped. The next semester, he was named sports editor of his school newspaper and he was able to keep that job through graduation. His grades went back up and he graduated with honors.
Whatever you do, don’t work more than 15-20 hours a week.
