Anybody know what the "primo student jobs" are on your average college campus? Figure 10-12 hours per week. I'm thinking some jobs must be more sought after than others... food service vs. library.. something like that..

At my daughter's school the "primo" job is being a student ambassador. These are the kids who give the tours, sit on student panels, etc. They also are the students who work in the admissions office. At my daughter's school, this is also a highly selective job requiring multiple interviews, and recommendations. There is extensive training. Pay is $12 per hour. Kids also get clothes to wear while giving tours. Only 8 students are selected to do this per class.

I think it depends on what you like to do. My boyfriend sat at the desk of a little used library. He got a lot of homework done. I shelved library books at a very busy library. I liked the exercise and seeing what was on the shelves. I'm glad I never had to clean bathrooms. I know people who enjoy jobs where they can talk to other people. One year I corrected Calculus homework. It took more time than I expected it to.

How about tutoring? Athletic departments hire a lot of tutors, I believe. My son's school runs a math tutoring center that operates on a walk-in basis. Tutors sign up for convenient hours, and get paid whether or not anyone shows up. Pay is not too bad, considerably above minimum.

S works as a tutor at his U's student services. He enjoys interacting with and helping students. If it's a 'quiet' shift, he can read and study. It fits into your hourly parameters. Good luck!

^ i agree. i did math tutoring (in-class and walk-in) last year and it was great. not only did i get paid 12.34 an hour i got to meet tons of people.

DD tells me that schools are always looking for certified lifeguards. At her school, these jobs also pay very well, and are quite flexible with hours as the pool is open a LOT of the time.

She tells me that if you want to get a lot of studying done, you want a job answering phones somewhere...either in one of the departments or in the dorm lobby. But she says those jobs are boring and they also don't pay particularly well.

I like to think I have the two best on-campus jobs at my university.

I work at the front desk of our Rec Center, swiping people in, selling passes, minimal laundry (mostly towels), and watching TV. We aren't allowed to do homework, but we get to interact with other workers and patrons on a consistent and regular basis. The "regulars" are the ones who make this job fun though!

I also work in the Athletic Dept, in the football equipment room. We go to every practice and game and don't get paid (we get a small scholarship) but the perks are unbelievable--travel, clothes, working with some of the best athletes in the country, etc It sounds cliche, but when I'm at football, it doesn't feel like work. We're running around, joking with the players, fixing a set of pads, etc.--always moving and doing something. And hey, if we get some free time while we're there, we have free football from the sidelines! It's a solid 40-50 hours/wk, but definitely the ultimate job for a college sports fan!

My daughter works at an office on campus for $9/hour. It's more like office assistant, but they have her do a lot of special projects - creating database, departmental luncheon and parties. She gets a lot of free food and the job is for 4 yrs, so she thinks it's a primo job. As far as money, it's on the high end of what the school usually pays. But she was getting paid $50/hr as a private tutor when she was in high school.

My daughter has a job as a lab assistant with the professor who is also her mentor for a research project. She really likes it - gets to meet faculty members that she might not otherwise as a freshman - and the prof is very understanding about working with her schedule especially at busy times like exams etc.

I've heard that a good and often forgotten one, especially with schools with large and good art departments, is being an art model. The times would probably be flexible, and if you can stay in one place for an hour it'd probably be easy work.

Modeling is actually pretty hard work. Luckily poses usually only last 20 min before you get a break. You need to be able to hold an interesting position - I can tell you after about 10 minutes most poses seem excruciating. Dancers and people who like yoga tend to make good models. You don't have to have a great body - it's more interesting for the students if they get a variety of body types.

Do you have to be naked?

In my opinion, the best job is RA - generally you get paid and/or have free or reduced housing.

RA is good, bartending is also excellent.

I had the BEST job: in the library! On my campus it was union rates so that was great. And after I did my dues stacking books the first year or two, I had my picks and took the the check-out desks where no one came (so I was basicaly paid to man a desk while I studied!).

My brother works at a big state u. He told my S that one of the best jobs (at least for guys) was working on the grounds crew at the football stadium.

My son is a "security monitor" in one of the dorms. Which means he sits there and makes sure students have IDs as they enter. He chooses to work the 10 pm-3 am (ack!) shift because he can do homework with no distractions (he lives in a house with 5 other guys).

D worked in the library her first semester and hated it. Second semester got a job tutoring math at an inner city middle school and loved it. Is going back again this semester. Friend of S had job as ticket seller for events (non athletic) and was able to get friends into sold out events and programs for free.

I worked at the field house aka gym. We washed towels...and as a perk got to do our own laundry too. We checked out gear and ordered pizza for the evening shift. Great Fun!!!

Another awesome job was as an usher for the arts and lectures department I saw Etta James, Maya Angelou and James Taylor and got paid for it!
