About 60 colleges have programs in which students can design their own majors. I am the director of the individualized major program at UMass Amherst.

Designing one's own major has proven to be inspiring and productive for many students, especially students with many interests that can't fit easily into a single major, or even a double major.

The design your own major programs also typically let students integrate their career ambitions with their academic studies. Many of the students are entrepreneurial and begin starting their own business or non-profit while still in college.

Examples of recent majors in our program are: Performing Arts Management, Neuroscience and Communication Disorders, Religion and Creative Writing, Entrepreneurship and Information Technology. Social Justice and Outdoor Education, Sustainable Community Development, Construction Management.

The program at UMass Amherst is 40 years old. The alumni have proven to be very successful. Again, details are available at designmymajor.com

Good luck to all the students with their college applications this fall and winter!
