Does anyone do this? I'm kind of confused on the whole process.

Do you choose ALL of you classes? Do you have a core curriculum? Is it all independent study or do you choose certain classes that you think would benefit your major?

It depends on the school. You’d have to research from there.

It depends on the school. At my school it’s called majoring in Multidisciplinary Studies. You fulfill all the regular core requirements. It’s not all independent study (though you can have some independent study), you choose classes that will benefit the major you’re creating…you have to propose the major by writing what educational goals you have and the courses that will help you achieve those goals. Basically you say what major you’re creating and the courses for it and why you’re choosing those courses. There’s other requirements, like you need several faculty advisors, the courses must be centered around a specific theme, there has to be a “significant amount” of courses beyond the introductory level, and it needs to include a senior capstone experience.

But that’s just my school…it will really vary depending on the school, so look at the requirements for the schools that you’re looking at where you’d want to create your own major.
