Desperately Need SAT Math Help

My SAT Math skills are completely miserable— I have taken the SAT three times and on CR and Writing usually score 700+, but on the math section fall within 580/90. I do not understand why I can't even break 600 when in school I have a 98 in AP Calc. Other than taking practice tests, could anyone please tell me of any other resources/techniques that would help improve my score? I'm desperate.

The SAT math section is going to be one of the things that i’ll remember in hatred for the rest of my life… lol.

I’m honestly a very good math student too, and rather enjoy math, but the SAT math section to me doesn’t test “math” it emphasizes problem solving skills and trickery. i haaate when a test is out to trick me on every single q! >:[

Well, how have you been practicing for the SAT Math section?
It would be helpful if you let us know what you’ve tried.

FWIW, in my experience, grades in high school are correlated more with a student being able to give the teacher what he/she wants…than with mathematical reasoning, which is what the SAT tests. I’d argue that math shouldn’t be taught in a plug-and-chug, mechanical fashion. Unfortunately, that’s the way it’s taught in the vast majority of high schools…by mediocre teachers…in bloated classes.

On a related note, I’ve found that calculus students have somewhat rusty geometry and algebra skills. Given the proper direction, they do just fine.

I tend to think my problem is over thinking. However, I have been taking the blue book tests and usually score mid 600s to 700. I don’t know if I choke or what. Also, how many would be safe to omit ?

@Whit0521:
As a general rule, only the last 3 or 4 questions on each SAT Math section are tricky. Are you only missing those questions?

Strong math students who are properly prepared for the SAT Math section rarely omit questions. Even if they don’t know how to get the correct answer…they can rule out at least one incorrect answer choice.

I accidently skipped a question in my march SAT and forgot to go back to it! yikes!! I lost marks right there! :frowning: How do you manage your time so you can finish the entire section and not miss any?

SAT Math is all about method! To solve the questions, you will need to use “unproper” method such as “plug-in” or “pick a number”. It’s well explained in Kaplan books I think.

I hear that Gruber’s SAT math workbook is very helpful. As for me, I tend to zoom through the math section and then go over all my answers.
