Destops/Laptops

what kind of computers is everyone getting? Is everyone getting theirs from NYU Computer Store (i logged in and found that their comp is actually more expensive than from dell.com). I want to get a dell laptop, can someone recommend me which kind would be the best to get?

thanks

dell is cheap, but so is their product. My advice to you is to avoid buying dell

As a network administrator, and someone who has been working in the IT field I can tell you Dell is a solid choice. Dell has a very good record, and their warrenty program beats the others hands down. For example Dell will send a tech out to your house/dorm free of charge to replace a part, HP and many others will ask that you ship them the computer. Which would you prefer?

yes i love dell comps and their services...what kind of dell laptops would you recommend me? Ive been looking at the Dell Inspiron ones..are those solid choices??

thanks

i use inspiron 700m
its been really good, no problems yet. i got in maybe 2 years ago.

Personally, I think Dell is about as cheap as it gets and this comes from experience. In fact, I work with boat loads of Dell computers daily and have noticed that over periods of time these things break far more often and in much more serious ways than its competitors. However, their tech support is incredible and if you arent a heavy computer user then you should be fine with a Dell. If youre a Sternie by chance, its all about IBM- however, im a Mac snob so im somewhat partial.

Dell is running some amazing deals this month, so if you are looking at the price then you might want to get one of their Inspiron models. I just bought a dell a few weeks ago and i got a E1505 with all the specs I wanted for a much more reasonable price than all the competitors

I had a Dell computer for my first year, and it broke down. Luckily, it was over the summer, and after 2 months of technicians coming to my house and shipping it to their depot, they finally decided to send me a replacement system. But since they don't make the model I originally had, they sent me an inspiron E1705. Does anyone know anything about this machine, and how well it works? Thanks.

I'm a big dell fan. I just bought myself a new laptop...oh, a week ago. I've been uploading all my music on it for the past few days, and it's working very well (very fast w/ my high-speed connection! the worst thing is to have a crappy comp. and high-speed...there's no point).

I bought mine refurbished. I SUGGEST YOU GO STRAIGHT TO THE DELL OUTLET BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME GREAT DEALS THERE!!! They sell previously purchased new (not even taken out of the box!), refurbished, and scratch/dented (meaning they have some cosmetic cuts/scrapes but the system runs good as new). I got a E1505 (which is what I recommend b/c E1705 isn't very different at all but it is more expensive) Inspiron w/ 1.83 dual core processor, 80GB HD (but 20 of it is a backup D drive, so I would recommend going for higher if you don't plan on buying an external drive for music/pictures which is what I plan to do), 2GB RAM!!!, plays dvds and burns cds, XP Media Center, integrated wireless, 4 usb port plus a 5-in-1 media card reader (i'm lovin this btw, no more usb cord for my pics), a one year warranty (all one year warranties on dell outlet products are free!), security software (mcafee for 3 months free), AND free shipping (free shipping on all comps. when you order directly from dell!).

I researched and scowered Ebay for three weeks (mainly b/c I was waiting on my next paycheck...haha) and this was the best deal I came across all together. $789 for all of that. It's lightweight with a big, bright screen and it looks/works like new. I love it!

DELL OUTLET ALL THE WAY :).

(Also, I almost bought a E1505 w/ 100GB 7200rpm HD (insanely fast), 2GB RAM, 2.0 dual processor, 256MB Video memory, wireless...basically upgraded to the most powerful machine dell makes all around...and it was only $1039 b/c it was in the scratch/dented category. The only reason I didn't was because I'm saving money and although I would have liked a kick ass machine like that, "I really don't need it" as my parents would say. Le sigh...)

Hope that helps :)

is there any wireless rooms in Hayden or anywhere in NYU?
how do students get connected to online with their laptops?

thanks

hi speed connection, hooked up to an ethernet (cat5) cable

wireless in some dorms and other areas around nyu, but not in any of the rooms, mostly on common halls, etc.

i got a MacBook Pro from the NYU Computer Store and i love it

aww sexy Macbook Pro. I have the old Powerbook G4, but no matter, still rocks any PC except IBMs.

If you're going to spend over $1,000 on a computer, I'd suggest looking at

Falcon Northwest's systems
<a href="http://www.falcon-nw.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.falcon-nw.com/</a></p>

Anything else, and you'd be well off with a system from
IBuypower
<a href="http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm</a></p>

They have some WICKED systems for $$$.

Or you could build one from scratch, which is always the best option.
