My son is interested in international relations but also would like to explore aspects of some new disciplines (environmental studies, urban planning, architecture - just out of curiosity, not necessarily as a major). How do these three schools compare?

Dickinson doesn’t offer much in terms of urban planning (though there is a class called “The City” that is made up of case studies). There are a few art history classes about architecture. Where Dickinson would really shine for your son is in the environmental studies aspect. Dickinson receives accolades all of the time for it’s environmental program. We are always getting good grades on whatever sustainability report cards there are out there. There are a lot of ways for students to get involved outside the classroom, with EarthNow, the College Farm, the TreeHouse (sustainable living), and other assorted clubs and organizations. There are lots of curricular and co-curricular ES options.

In the International Studies dept, students have to pick a concentration and one option is “Globalization and Sustainability,” so if your son was interested he could combine the two that way.

International and Environmental? Dickinson all the way.
