Did I make a career mistake? (accounting)

So quick bio of myself…I have a BBA in Accounting and I am graduating with a MAcc in July 2018. I have also passed 2 parts of the CPA exam and aiming to finish before July 2018 too. Furthermore, I recently accepted a Big 4 job offer for Advanced Risk & Compliance Analytics.

Well according to my classmates, this will lead me down a career path away from accounting/auditing, therefore my CPA will basically be useless other than getting the bonus at the Big 4. I knew this would lead down to do more IS and data analysis type of work, but I didn’t realize it would be no more accounting.

No. You have to start somewhere. You can ask to transfer later if you miss the accounting part. You can do so much more than accounting with your degree tho. Congrats on getting a great job!

Congrats on the job! Not sure why your classmates are in a position to opine on your career path. Just roll with it and see how it plays out. We each managed to find “our thing” in the accounting world.

Congratulations on your accomplishments. Sounds to me like you are in great shape. Having a CPA and Big 4 experience will serve you well wherever you end up in the business world.

IS and data analysis work might pay better anyway.
