Did my chances improve?

I just received my Q1 senior year grades:
all A/A-s with the exception of two Hebrew courses - B+ and a B

Here are my stats:

ED: Gallatin

GPA: My school doesn't do GPAs, but it would probably be about a B- or a B
SATI: 800 math, 740 verbal (1540)
SATIIs: 730 math 1c, 800 math 2c, 770 writing, 710 history
Classes: all APs offered and most Honors
ECs: Editorial positions on Newspaper, Drama/Musical, Community Service, Commended National Merit Scholar, MUDs

In 9th grade I took an independent study in philosophy and received an A

Do you think my senior year grades will be the boost I need to make it in? My guidance counselor is calling NYU this afternoon to give them in.

Honestly, I don't think senior grades would have a significant effect on anyone's application. Just so you know, Gallatin doesn't consider SAT scores when reviewing the application. (I've heard this from people who were accepted to Gallatin.)

Somehow I strongly doubt that any school at NYU doesn't consider SAT scores - the admissions office would make it known if they weren't considered. People who were accepted to Gallatin don't know what its admissions criteria are, just their own statistics, so find another source of info.

All schools of NYU consider SAT scores in making their decision. While some schools weight them differently your score will definitely help your cause. As for your senior year grades they won't make a difference. They are strictly to see that you have maintained whatever level of academic progress that you had when you applied.

What makes you think that my senior year grades will not be relevant? I thought that they like to see improvement over the years.

I believe that in general with all college admissions for most schools they like to see improvement from freshman to junior year, when you're applying ED. 1st quarter, as far as I know, is not considered in ED admissions for any school unless they want to see if you've continued improving ie 3.2 freshman year but you've steadily risen and now have a 3.7 as a junior. With something like that senior year grades would matter to see if you are maintaining your new level of preformance.
When it comes to RD however, 1st semester grades are taken into consideration for most schools considering the fact that most schools ask for a midyear grade report. I doubt however that if anyone had a 3.2 cum GPA through their first 3 years and then suddenly had a 3.7 GPA in their first semester of senior year, that the 1 semester of such a high GPA would make the low cum GPA look that much better. I hope this helps and makes sense.

yup I agree with soprano. NYU called my counselor and asked for my Q1 grades...and they said they do that if applicant's grades improved rather dramatically from freshman year to junior year. My GPA went up from 2.4 to 3.7... :( :)

Not all schools around the contry are on quarters. For instance in my hometown our first semester is not over until mid Jan. As a result if Senior year grades counted then kids from Ca that applied ED would be penalized because they would have nothing to show. As a result, no senior year grades matter. They are strictly there to monitor your progress and make sure that you are staying consistent with what you have shown. Also senior year schedule for the majority of college students is significantly easier and gpa's should be higher in a students senior year

hey
i applied to nyu as well, RD. I was wondering what you guys think. I initially thought of it as a reach school, but what do you guys think of my chances into getting into there gsp program(or their liberal arts if u think i even got a shot)? i want to go to either ny or d.c. bc the u.n. and the world bank are located there and i want a career dealing w the development of third world countries. anyways these r my stats:
G.p.a 3.75w
act 27
sat 1240
business club
drug prevention club
work experience
upward grade trend- (first sem/sec. sem.)
freshman 3.57/3.57
soph.-3.5/3.7
junior-3.8/4.33
asian-indian
what do u guys think?

OK stats, but NYU is your reach. You might get into GSP but I think it's tougher when you are a R.D. applicant. I assume that R.D. GSP is harder than E.D. GSP so...you might have to be in the 1300s range or above 1250 I think...but you never know. Apply to CAS, it's less competitive and this school is for you since you are concerned about your career as an Economist.

ugh, alright guys....do i really have to say this? over compensating lol maybe but not anymore.

Mark my words,

mona you have "zero" chance and you should not apply just in case you might get into GSP and that I might have to bear seeing you, the most unqualified individual, for the four years of my life at NYU. Seriously, do NOT apply to NYU. Though it's up to you. However....think about it, you don't want to embarrass yourself infront of the whole admissions office. They will tear the app apart into awfully little pieces.

yet I still do think you are an OK candidate but not that of a strong candidate. feel little better? i hope so.

best of luck !

KJayson, that was really uncalled for and harsh. Mona definitely does have a shot, espcially at the GSP program. Yes her test scores are low, but they are in the range for GSP. Also, her grades show an upward trend and her junior grades are awesome. Mona, are those your weighted or unweighted GPA, and have you taken the hardest courseload at your school?

Jayson you really cannot say things like that. Her app will not be torn up and she does have a chance; don't be so harsh. It is definitely worth it for her to apply.

you probably did not read other posts regarding mona. I was joking around with Matti. I did say she has a good chance. she was a model for Indian bridal fashion show...that's quite an EC isn't it? and also her SAT scores and GPA aren't that bad at all.

kiki goto other threads and read my posts if you really care. :)

but this one, i was joking around with matti and mona she knows already..

mona - please don't hijack threads. make your own post if you want to see your chances, don't take over mine.

lol mona is a girl. be nice to her, be a gentleman. does anyone else have Indian fetish here?

I dont think this is the place to talk about fetishes, and i dont think u talking about fetishes is going to make her like you lol

Ya we really should stop hijacking threads, maybe 25% of the threads we have going are still on the relevant topic.

Im going to make a cafe thread thingy to stop this.

lol true true, but what can i say, some are really attractive, at least to my eyes.
