Did visiting change your mind about any colleges?

I was anticipating loving Wesleyan, Amherst and Williams but discovered that small schools were just not for me. Saved me a lot of trouble applying!

How about you guys?

well i know the opposite..i hated MIT until I visited it!

I thought I was gonna love GWU before I visited, but decided not even to apply after I did. I didn't like the lack of a central campus feel or the fact that the dining hall was more reminiscent of a food court.

(haven't visited any campuses yet myself, but bump)

DS#1 didn't like Tufts or Penn...which was a surprise to him because so many kids from his school end up at one or the other.

uchicago was pretty bland esp. the weather

My Columbia tour was horrible. I was totally indifferent to the school afterward.

Yale and Tufts.

And I wasn't really expecting to love Princeton, but I was surprised at how much I hated it. xD

Both Columbia and Penn seemed too urban and surrounded by slightly scary neighborhoods, especially in a week that also included schools in beautiful college towns. It's interesting how weather plays a part...both of those visits were on rainy, windy days.

I thought I would really like Cornell, but after visiting, I didn't even apply there.

My son felt exactly the same about GW as Natalie.

DePaul. I liked Chicago, big cities and especially the night life and parks around the campus... until I stepped on campus during a weekday. It was the end of their spring quarter and there were still thousands of students crammed together on essentially 2 blocks. And the campus resources seemed few and far between for that amount.

I wasn't a fan of RPI after visiting, but I talked with a friend that attends and he addressed all my concerns. Then again, if you visit and instantly know you don't like it, there's probably no changing that.

Colby and Colgate, though unfortunately I visited AFTER I applied

Good question!

wow, I had the same reaction, OP to those same schools! yeah, I need 10,000 +

My D very much disliked Yale, Swarthmore, and Williams, and was rather ambivalent about Brown, Wellesley, Smith and Bryn Mawr. Liked Wesleyan and Kenyon more than she thought she would. And unlike Southeasttitan, who started this thread, she was drawn to schools that were a little smaller and more self-contained.

I was excited for Brandeis but my visit pretty much ruined it for me. Perhaps it was because I visited right after going to MIT (which I loved despite the nasty weather that day). I was turned off by the buildings and the fact that there was nobody actually walking around. Just didn't feel very alive. Also, there were kids yelling out windows which was unattractive. Our tour guide seemed embarrassed by it too. lol

I visted SMU and Rice and didn't like either. The SMU tourguide was a ditz and the weather at Rice was so humid. @_@

i was indifferent toward UCI until i visited it and now i like it a lot

When I went on tours with my D, I tried not to be too influenced by the tour guide, but some were quite strange. I find the attempt to walk backwards for 30 minutes to an hour to be pretty lame and disconcerting.
