If he receives gifts from students, it’s usually from grad students for whom he’s had a closer professional relationship as a thesis advisor, member of a dissertation defense committee, etc. Typical gifts have included cookies, tea and a tea pot, wine with a nice opener, etc.</p>
<p>Thanks for all the feedback! It sounds like the consensus is that it should be something low key, if anything at all, which only makes sense since it is from a student. I think in appreciation of all this person has done (over and above the call of duty) he wanted to make some kind of gesture. Writing a note of appreciation is something he will definitely do.</p>
