difference between act and sat essay

Hi I took the act this year and got a 10/12 points on the essay which I was satisfies with. I did not do very well on the rest of the test and now am trying the sats which seem to be a better fit for me. My question is what's the difference between writing the sat and act essay. All what I did on the act was refute arguements against my points and go into in depth detail with my examples. Should I just use the same strategy? I heard that people who took the sat said that they related their essays with books and historical figures..on my act essay I just gave real life and personal examples. Is it necessary to include historical figures and books to recieve a good score?
