Does anyone know the difference between these two schools? S is looking for a graduate program in music and both schools offer several. How does he know which one to apply to? They sound very similar. Are these two schools completely different yet on the same campus? Each one has a different application.

I found this link on the UM STMD website after following links for prospective students- graduate admissions- faqs.
It outlines which specific graduate degrees are offered through the Rackham school of Graduate Studies. Hope this helps.

I went to Michigan long ago, in the time of the dinosaurs, and I was not a music major, but from what I remember “Rackham” is not so much a school as a blanket term for all graduate studies at Michigan, aside from med school and law school. From their website: The Rackham Graduate School is the home of graduate education at the University of Michigan. More than 8,200 students are enrolled in Rackham’s 108 Ph.D., 87 master’s, and 34 certificate programs situated within the schools and colleges of the University.

I would think your son is better off starting his explorations via STMP. Michigan is a very big place.

From the “application procedure” section of the school of music website:

The Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Doctor of Musical Arts (A.Mus.D., generally referred to as the D.M.A.) degree programs are administered through the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. The School of Music, Theatre & Dance is one of the Graduate School’s one hundred and thirty departments and programs. These programs are under the supervision of Jason Geary, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Looks like Jason Geary wants your son to email him. That mailing address is on North Campus, where the music school is. The Rackham building is far, far away from there.

Whatisnormal, What does your son want to study and what degree is he looking to get?
It looks like the Masters level performance degree programs (MM) and a Specialist in Music degree are offered through the SMTD and other graduate degrees MA, MFA, DMA, PhD as novicetoller indicated above are offered through the Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Whatever degree I believe the majority of classes are going to be located at the School of Music, as novicetoller stated the Rackham School is more a designation than a physical school. There is a Rackham Auditorium on campus where some performances take place.

^the distinction is pretty much between the “hands on” (eg performance, composition) =SOM; academically oriented (eg. Musical arts which has a cognate element, MA in multimedia, which is the next sequence of the PAT (music technology) program).

So, grad pursuit will all be “housed” at the SOM in terms of advisors, classes, etc. The degree-conferring and guidance will flow from either Rackham or SOM. the process will be more unified than it appears at first blush, kind of lie the subtle difference between a UG BFA vs a BMus…a student in jazz improv dept, for example, is BFA, while a typical trumpet perf major is a BMus…

So where to apply is related directly to desired pursuit. Is your son pursuing a performance-focused grad study, or something else? What is his UG degree…that will give us strong hints (but not always.)

He wants his doctorate in music composition. So, originally, he was applying to Rackham for the DMA in composition. But the website says you must have a masters to apply. So he looked at the MA from Rackham which designates that 1/3 of the degree is composition, 1/3 is performance, and 1/3 is outside of music altogether. He wants all of his work to be in music. STMP offers an MA that sounds pretty much the same as that of Rackham but also an MM, which is 1/3 music, 1/3 performance, and 1/3 electives, which I’m guessing can be music-related. So it sounds like he should go for STMP MM. At least, that is his best guess.

^that would be my best guess. It might not hurt to put a call in and talk to the registrar at SMTD.
