Hello to Hilary and current students!

A few general questions …

So we got a sense that the everyone ( BFA’s and BA’s ) gets along well together, but, I wonder if someone can honestly address if the training and the opportunities are equitable?

Yes, I realize that’s probably not a black and white question but any info and insight would be very helpful!

For example…
Outright, I know that there are huge credit differences, BFA Acting - 60 major credits, BA - Acting Focus 30 major credits, but can someone tell me what the differences in class instruction are between the programs? Do they follow the same track for the first two years ( with access to the same teachers ) then branch away and do whatever? or is the BA completely different classes and teachers? Or is it just a more scant program spread out over 4 years with more academics?

Does anyone know the percentages of how many successfully re-audition for the BFA, either MT or Acting?

That’s all I can think of now for the public forum. thanks! :)

jake6970, thank you for the anecdote in the other thread regarding your friend re-auditioning the first semester.

So it’s safe to assume that if your on the waiting would be eligible for that opportunity, should it pop up.

Hilary, could a similar scenario occur, if someone is accepted to the BA and is not on a waiting list?

Thank you!

The BA majors in the Acting program have access to all of the same classes the only difference is that the BFA are REQUIRED to take them as opposed to the BAs who are not. The exception comes with MT classes - technique and voice lessons are strictly for the BFA MTs only. On that note - music theory as well as most of the dance classes are open to anyone to take.

BA Actors are not separated from the BFA counterparts in terms of what specific teachers they are assigned just as the MTs arent separated from the Actors in these beginning acting classes.

On to the switching of majors - I cant give you a percentage because I dont know any exact numbers and also because its kind of arbitrary since it is a case-by-case basis. Specifically for the MT department, just as with an incoming transfer, availability of space depends on current students leaving the program, going on tour, sick, etc. So the number each year varies. We can never go above 100 MT students; the simplest explanation as to why is that we have 5 vocal instructors who are strictly held to 20 students per semester.

BUT to give you a number, for example, at the beginning of this past spring semester, we added 3 new people to the MT department.

That’s a great help Hilary! Thank You! That’s sort of what I thought, but just wanted to be sure.

Of course, answers sometimes also spark more questions! So my D left a message today to talk with someone in the department. Hopefully she can get a little more in depth in regards to her personally. :)

Such a big decision!
