I am still decided to go to UIUC. I plan to major in biology, but i am worried about the difficulty of the classes. Are the intro chem/biology classes weed out classes for premed? Also, is it really hard to do well in those classes?

Hey yeah I was in your exact position when I was entering Illinois, I thought the chem/bio classes would be hard. My parents were forcing me to go because they thought It would be a good opportunity. Now I wish that I never listened to them and went somewhere else because the bio/chem classes are just unbelievably difficult and I’ve been wanting to transfer since first semester of freshman year.

My environmental science teacher went to uiuc and he said that the class averages on every chemistry test were around a 55% (before the curve)

I’ve heard that too. A friend of mine is close to leaving due to difficulty of the classes esp bio and chem. He said intro level classes are brutal and he took all the AP level ones in high school.

@namert65 … Are the curves in those classes good enough for you to still be able to get A’s and B’s?

@cupcake1234 Let’s just say they werent good enough for me to get A’s and B’s and i aced all honors and AP science classes in high school. When i heard the classes were hard i thought i would do really well but i was terribly wrong. I just wish that i wouldve gone to Indiana or Marquette… those classes wouldve been probably way easier… anything would be easier than the U of I classes.

So even if you come in for office hours and ask for helpn you’ll still do poorly? I’m worried because my major involves a lot of science classes.

namert65- have you reached out for help? Participating in a study group, visiting TA or professor, looking for tutoring?

@babytuttles @Westchestermom I have tried a lot of those resources and so have a lot of my friends… but even with the help… we are all still really struggling!! It honestly is a terrible feeling and my friends and I have always been the smarter type of people… I’m pretty sure its just u of I that the science classes are really difficult. Cuz I know friends at Marquette and Indiana that are doing really well in their science classes. Its crazy how hard they are and how there’s no help basically. I’m not going to tell you what to do but you probably will have a very tough time at u of I especially if you are in a science major

I’ve got to weigh in here. The courses are difficult. The teaching is top notch, and critical to your success in your chosen major. It’s what you know that makes you valuable, not an A in an easy, dumbed down class. It’s fine if people get an average of 55% on tests. They’ll be curved. Their real value is to show you what you haven’t mastered. Study. Learn. Recruiters know U of I. They’re not coming because students get and A, they’re coming because the graduates are successful once hired. Your struggles in class will pay off in the near future. Stick it out and don’t take the easy way out.

@Balthezar . Thanks for your perspective. I understand you are a parent and not a current student living the classes daily. No one is taking the easy way out. They are just making the smart choice.

You get in what you get out, I got an A+ in Phys 211, 212 and an A- chem 102. And I’m not one of those kids who doesn’t have any fun. Freshman year i went out on the weekends and had a good time but when there were tests i studied and I made sure i did well because that was my priority. However a lot of my friends got Cs Ds and failed those courses as well.
