My son played HS football all 4 years - varsity starter Jr & Sr year. He loves the game - played corner as his favority spot - not ternibly BIG or tall - not a bad player but not a rock star either - just loves the game and can't imagine not playing. Has his eye on DIII - has his HEART set on one school - has had contact with the recruiting coach of this school. Coach visited him at his school - we were invited out for a game with a bunch of other recruits. He applied - was accepted - but we are NOT sure what to expect next about football? Is there a FORMAL process by which a DIII coach lets someone know "hey you can be on the team?" As parents this process is ALL new to us. My fear is son has gotten himself into thinking if he was accpeted that means he can play footbal but not sure that how this works.... It is a school that just started their football program. HELP.

Someone may post in this thread that can answer your question but you can also try posting on the recruited athletes forum. Someone there may know too.

D3 schools do recruit, they just can’t offer athletic scholarships. Sounds like the coach is interested in your son. Was he just recently accepted? If so you may hear from the coach soon. If he has or can find the coach’s email he could email the coach telling him he was accepted and wants to play there.

Most DIII teams will have tryouts in the fall. Since the coach has been in contact, he will keep your son informed. Since there is no money given, there is nothing “formal” for DIII sports. Some schools might do something though.

Even DI programs have walk-ons. You contact the athletic department and probably the coach to find out the process. And you will likely need to make arrangements to get your kid to school early because at most schools practice will begin for fall sports before students generally arrive.
