DIII XC/Track coach not responding to emails

I’m a senior in HS who has been emailing a few coaches in Divisions 2 and 3 regarding track (I actually was about to commit to a school but I had to pull out because my parents didn’t want me going to an LAC). So now I’m emailing coaches I have emailed before. One of the colleges is Babson, but the coach has never responded to my emails or calls. It confuses me because I would be top 7 for them for XC, so I don’t think that he’s ignoring me. He’s also the only coach, so I can’t contact an assistant coach or recruiting coordinator. Can anyone give me advice about how to reach the coach? Babson is one of my top choices and I think I would be a good academic fit (30 ACT, 3.7, lots of leadership, etc).

My son had to contact a couple of coaches multiple times before they responded. I think a lot of them are just very busy. Keep trying!

To clarify, the Babson coach didn’t respond to me before or after I planned to verbally commit. So no emails from him at all.

@MaineLonghorn thanks for the advice. I’m actually planning on visiting Babson and Bentley on the 9th but apparently that’s an NCAA dead day. When will I catch a break!?

Pat,

Does the dead period apply to Division 3 schools? You may want to investigate this, or play dumb and continue to call the coach to see if he or she is available to meet. Call during the morning (while you are at school). Leave a message if you can’t get through saying that you will be up for a visit on the 9th and would like to speak to him or her. If you still don’t get through, email the coach. Tell him or her that you left a voicemail message, that you are visiting campus soon, that the school is high on your radar and tell him or you your times. Persistence is important.

@gointhruaphase thank you for your advice! I’ll do that soon

My son’s sport is swimming and throughout this recruiting process, many coaches he has communicated with are totally unresponsive when it comes to returning calls/e-mails. This has happened even with coaches who actually are interested in recruiting him. It seems unprofessional on their part but since it has happened with multiple coaches he has encountered, I think they are just busy. My advice is to keep trying.

I agree with the advice of others, email and tell the coach you will be there on date xxx and ask if you can stop by his office or practice. If in fact he is the only coach it is unlikely with practice, meet and travel schedules that he will respond to anything in the middle of the season. I would keep contacting him until he tells you to stop.

Another tip that I have used to find people/coaches is to look at the athletic staff directory. Just an FYI – if you look up Men’s cross country/ track in Babson’s directory there are two other names listed, they don’t have an email, but if you call the athletic department I am sure they will provide you contact info and then copy both assistant coaches on all emails as well.

@patriot420 - Hopefully your e-mail address doesn’t have “420” in it like your username here does – might give a coach pause.

@stepay It does not lol. My birthday is 4/20, hence my username. For all wondering, he responded and I visited campus.

@patriot420 - Ok. Interesting. I’m sure you realize that your username here makes it appear that you are an advocate for legalizing (or at least using) marijuana. Probably a good idea not to use that for things going forward as people will for sure not think that that name came from your birthday. Glad to hear that the coach responded.

@stepay I see what you mean. Fortunately, this is the only account I have the numbers in my username.
