Direct Admits

Direct Admit schools with the best chances for a “normal” student with a GPA of a 3.8 and a ACT of a 26 (retaking it after tutoring next weekend) in NHS, Spanish NHS, competitive dancer since age 5, dance class assistant to young children, volunteer in many activities, has been to Haiti and continues to do Charitable work for the country, honor roll every semester of high school, will have CNA… she is not going into it with above 4.0 or crazy high ACT/SAT but really wants Direct Admit. Any schools better than others with a “holistic” admission?

If you are in NYS, SUNY Plattsburgh has an excellent direct admit nursing program.

Lots of Northeast direct admit schools that will take her. Where are you looking?

We are in the midwest. She wants out of Chicago, pretty much willing to go anywhere. Her dream schools were CA and in AZ before direct admit was more of a priority.

Pennsylvania has more direct admit RN programs than any other state, I believe. Some will offer merit aid with those scores.

Look at the University of Cincinnati, which is direct admit.

When we went for orientation last week they said through their holistic admissions the incoming nursing class had ACT scores ranging from 22 to 35 (the average was 26). They are moving towards a panel-type interview process for admissions. My daughter was the first group to have one (unless you had an ACT score in the 30s, at least that’s what we parents were able to deduce) but they hinted eventually they wanted everyone to interview. They said they read every essay (there are a couple required) and really paid attention to all parts of the application.

This year, there were 1,440 applicants. They accept about 350 kids, with the aim of having about 195 attend. My daughter’s incoming nursing class is 197.

It is the first school that ever offered a BSN program. Across the street from a major medical campus that includes several hospitals. There is a lot to offer, both academically and socially. Notoriously stingy on any kind of merit, however, unless you are tippy top.

California nursing programs are some of the most competitive in the country, because there are not enough seats to meet the demand, even for in-state students. Also, their out of state tuition is high. There are some other states with more reasonable out of state tuition. Also, check to see whether your state has any reciprocity agreements with any other states for discounted out of state tuition.

Have you read through the thread for direct entry hopefuls with less than perfect credentials?

Lots of good advice for the “normal” student.
