Disbursement of financial aid on hold due to academic warning review

So your parent was ill to the point that you had to go home every weekend to take care of them, and is in a home now.

How do you expect them to still take out loans for you?

Did this all happen during the beginning of the semester? Could you have dropped the classes and taken a leave of absence to focus on caring for your parent, and continued school later? Or taken online classes for a semester so you don’t have to commute?

What school are you in that has a special gpa calculator?

The numbers work for me. Consider 6 completed semesters with an average of 1.8. Then the OP will go this spring and summer. If the number of credits are roughly the same for each time period (presumably with 18 credits now and fewer than that in the summer) getting a 3.3 in the spring and summer will put his average over a 2.0. The calculator is a standard advising tool.

He has 7 completed semesters…you have to include fall

1.8 x 7 = 12.6 (assuming 105 credits…which is about 7 semesters of credits… 189 pts )
3.3 x 2 = 6.6. ( assuming 18+12 credits…99 pts)
—————————
2.13

Of course this is assuming that a student who’s been doing so poorly for 7 semesters can somehow get at least a 3.3 over the next 8 months while taking 30 credits.

And how is this low income student funding this semester and summer classes at a pricey OOS public??

Update: Sorry for the late response. The review is complete and all of my aid has been reinstated to me!

I currently have all A’s in my 6 classes and plan to get a 3.5 this semester and graduate in the summer. Everyone who doubted me, I’ll be happy to DM you my graduation pictures soon. I am stronger than my past and I will continue to succeed no matter what. NOTHING is standing in my way. xoxo

@CheddarcheeseMN

Hello! That’s exactly what I’m aiming for. Your calculation is the one my advisor put together for me as well. I currently have all A’s and plan to get a 3.5 this semester, even though I only need a 3.3. I can’t wait to prove everyone wrong. Thank you for understanding the CORRECT calculations.

It’s so funny seeing people say they doubt I’ll meet my goal due to a one post when they have NO idea what was going on in my life. Haters are truly my motivators.

Sn: (being that I have a 4.0 currently, I truly want to maintain it. But I have to look at a realistic viewpoint and assume I will get a B in one class. So far, I’ve gotten A’s on all of my quizzes and a 95 on my first exam. The other class which I fear that I will get a B in allows exams corrections, so I think I have a chance at getting an A if I maintain the proper exam correction points.)

Sn: I have total loan forgiveness due to my special family case, which has truly been a blessing. I’ll be getting a job making 50K+ right after graduation (same place I did my internship) with almost nothing to pay back. I’ve come a FAR way.

This will be the last time I’ll be commenting on this post. My question has been answered, all of my aid is reinstated, I just received a scholarship, approved for total loan forgiveness before graduation and my parent is in proper care. My life is looking very positive from here. Now I will be focusing majority of my time to my studies. Take care everyone. Never give up. Aim for your goals. xx

If you are saying that your Parent Plus loan has been approved for spring 2019 and summer 2019 and ALREADY forgiven, before your parent even takes the loan, well I’m going to say I don’t believe you. It isn’t possible for that to happen. Penn State can’t forgive parent plus loans or even student loans. They administer them but do not make decisions about forgiving them. The Dept of Education has to review and consider forgiveness and once that happens the parent/student isn’t eligible for more loans. It doesn’t happen quickly and usually takes years.

You asked our opinions on your 1.8 gpa and how you could continue to get student loans, and we told you. Now you say you don’t believe us and we don’t believe in you. We don’t know if that 1.8 was earned with 1-2 A’s every semester and 2 F’s, or if it was mostly C’s with a few D’s. It’s unlikely courses with F’s will count toward your graduation requirements for number of credits or for major requirements while it is likely D’s will.

I don’t think OP plans to revisit the thread, but I will throw out there that maybe PSU canceled the loans and provided institutional grants to cover. If not, we will probably never really know what happened. I do wish OP the best.
