Discussing offers from other universities during a visit?

As an earlier poster advised: If profs ask about where you have offers from, be honest and forthright without being rude. Being evasive (eg. “I’ve been accepted at several other excellent places”) is pointless, and mildly annoying. If the profs don’t ask, there’s no reason for you to bring up your other offers. No one wants to feel that they’re being “played off” against another department.

OP,
Your dilemna is real but quite a wonderful one to have. You may very well stay at U Chi, but see what other Us have to offer.

My son was really torn between to schools. One as an early interview and admit, and one was the last interview. I encouraged him to return and gather more info. It is many years of one’s life, so be open and see what feels best

Anyways, I’m at Yale now, and yes, it is starting to convince me that I would be really happy there too. And there is someone who is really into exoplanets and who is really trying to get increased collaboration between the geophysics and astronomy departments there. It’s not something that shows up on their webpages yet, but after talking to the prof today, I’m convinced that Yale would be one of the best places to study exoplanets (maybe not last year, but in the near future, definitely).

There is just so much that doesn’t show up on webpages.

And yeah - I was asked what other offers I had. But it wasn’t a big deal or anything - in fact - they usually expect it and react positively to it.
