<p>The US and the UK are both, depending on how you look at it, (un)fortunate users of first past the post electoral systems. Some people like it because it allows for more direct accountability. Others do not, because it reduces the amount of direct representation.</p>
<p>Direct representation (i.e. proportional systems) does not always mean "better democracy."</p>
