Distance learning opportunities for AP Music Theory?

My son would like to take AP Music Theory next year, but it's not offered at his high school, and travelling to another high school to take it would probably create an insurmountable scheduling hurdle. Is anyone aware of a high-quality online AP Music Theory class? I checked EPGY, which unfortunately doesn't offer AP Music Theory. Anyone have a good experience with any other internet-based course?

I just checked the EPGY website. They still offer a beginning course in music theory. If your son doesn't need the credit, you may want to order the text which they use: Fundamentals of Music. It's pretty much self-teaching.

Pennsylvania Homeschoolers offer AP Music Theory online, but I believe you must be an official homeschooler to take the class. I know that the classes taught by PA homeschoolers are highly regarded. http://www.pahomeschoolers.com/courses/

I did find some other possibilities: http://www.iowalearningonline.org/detail.cfm?cID=40&dID=117

I also found information that EPGY will be offering AP Music Theory in 2007 http://epgy.stanford.edu/ohs/EPGY_OHS_Academic_Program.pdf

Another option to consider would be to have him take a college class in music theory and then use the study guide to review for the AP test.

There are probably other options available -- but that should get you started.

Thanks so much for the replies. I missed next year's offerings from EPGY. From reading these boards, it seems that EPGY offers uniformly good classes, so I'm inclined to point my son in that direction.

I agree -- I think the EPGY online option would be the best -- with the other options as back-ups.

I would contact them now to get the ball rolling -- their online high school is new this year (where kids can enroll full-time) and they may have certain deadlines for admission or enrollment that is earlier than it previously was. I really don't know -- but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
