Cindy ran from her house to school at an average speed of 6 miles per hour and returned along the same route at an average speed of 4 miles per hour. If the total time it took her to run to the school and back was one hour, how many minutes did it take her to run from her house to school?
a) 16
b) 18
c) 20
d) 22
e) 24

I can't solve this question I hope somebody helps me coz I m preparing for my sat1 in october and I am not good in distance questions.

Always remember Speed = Distance/Time

Let the distance from Cindy’s house to her school be d miles.
Since Distance = Speed*Time

Distance from house to school (at 6mph) :

d = 6*t (supposing t is time taken in hrs. from house to school)

Distance from school to house ( at 4mph) :

d = 4*(1-t) (since total time was one hour)

Equate the two.

=> 6t = 4 - 4t
=> 10t = 4
=> t = 4/10 HOURS.

Question wants time in minutes so multiply t with 60

t(min.) = 24 mins. Hence e) is the answer. Hope it helped. :)

Thanks alot I understand it now.
