Distinguished Scientist Scholarship

Did anyone here get one?

My daughter received one. She’s been looking (unsuccessfully) for other DSS recipients on the facebook page and at Accepted Students day last weekend. I thought I’d check here and found your post asking the same question. Did you or someone you know get one?

Hey jkeil911, I thought your name looked familiar. I should have realized!

Here we are at the end of this roller coaster. I’m so ready to get off. Just hope my girl feels good about whichever school (Bard or Grinnell) she chooses! How’s your daughter faring? Did she get the DSS?

Why don’t you ask admissions to put your daughters in touch with current students who are DSS scholarship winners? I’m sure they’d be happy to.

@ SpiritManager, we tried asking at Accepted Students Day last weekend. They can’t give out names, and they were unwilling to take my daughter’s name and contact info to pass along to others. We thought there might have been some acknowledgment of the award or grouping of other recipients at the event so the students could meet each other, but there wasn’t. D asked for and was able to get a 45 minute private tour of the science facilities which brightened up the day considerably.

@PortlandiaParent that does seem odd that they wouldn’t pass along her contact info. I’ll see if I can find out for you someone for your daughter to correspond with. I know last year there were some DSS winners on CC but I don’t know if they ended up choosing Bard or not. Congratulations to your daughter by the way! A great scholarship. Full tuition! On another thread there was a post about physics at Bard. Perhaps the father who posted, @Monkey13, about his graduating son, could put your daughter in touch with him.

Thank you for the congrats, I will pass them along … it is such a wonderful honor and one that seems to be rare these days!

I have been in contact with Monkey13 and her son has been helpful answering some of my daughter’s questions via facebook.

You don’t have to worry about looking for others … D is going to repost on the facebook page and see what emerges. Thanks.

I’m sorry I’m just seeing your responses now, @PortlandiaParent‌. D would not apply to Bard. I was just checking to see how those who did made out. D is going to Pitt in August.

lol, FWIW, I got the economics scholarship.

Just wondering if anyone can share how awarding of special scholarships like the DSS works? My son was accepted EA, and we just received his estimated financial aid award, which was pretty generous, but did not mention anything about the DSS that he applied for. Does that mean he did not win that scholarship, or do they wait and award the merit scholarships (like economics and DSS) later, in March or April, after regular applicants have been accepted? Trying to determine if there might be merit aid coming later, beyond the “Bard Scholarship” listed on the the estimated aid letter we received today.

@LynnBe - Happy to hear that he received Bard grant money in a generous financial aid offer. But, as for the notification for the DSS Scholarship - I have no idea when he’ll hear, although it wouldn’t surprise me that they’d want to review all applicants, EA and RD before choosing. Has he written to the chair of the particular science program he’s interested in, or asked the admissions department when he may hear? Probably best to ask the school itself - it won’t hurt his chances for the scholarship!

@SpiritManager - We sent an email today to financial aid, asking about timing for the merit awards, and if the “estimated” offer would include merit aid, if he’d won some. I imagine we won’t hear back before next week. Just thought I’d ask on here in case some other EA student won a DSS in the past, and might know how the notification timing worked. Thanks for your thoughts!

I emailed and received a very helpful reply to my question about merit aid, from the Bard Financial Aid office today. They said that decisions are made about the Bard Distinguished Scientist and EEC Scholarships in March, and then notification is made in the students’ financial aid award letter that is mailed in early April. So, if anyone received an “estimated” financial aid award letter recently, any merit awards are NOT included in that letter.
