I know Div. III cannot give out athletic scholarships, but do they entice athletes to attend by offering various academic scholarships? If so, would an athlete know about these academic scholarships before a financial aid package is sent? Thanks

Merit Aid... whether that's for academics or athleticism is part of the financial aid package and usually, if you are a recruited athlete or brainiac you'd know if you were up for one of those or not. However, it is my understanding that MOST DIII schools insist that everything along the lines of aid has to be confirmed by the Financial Aid office.

A friend of our's son interviewed for this economics academic award or something. They flew him out to interview with a number of professors and board members, but he won't know if he got that scholarship until his letter of admission's comes, and truly he doesn't even know if he is in the school yet! (although it's a REALLY good bet).

How much you know and when will depend on the coach and the extent to which the potential athlete exceeds the academic caliber of the typical student at that school, or what that student brings to the student body. Best advice is to have the best dialog possible with the coach. Good luck!

The answer is sometimes, as always it depends on the school. I've heard of FA applications that were tagged for athletic recruits at some schools.
