A bit off topic but tangentially related, I was reminded of this discussion last night. The theatre company in Toronto that I’m involved with is in the midst of a production that has as an ‘association relationship’ the city’s theatre company that, and I’ll quote for accuracy, “Obsidian is passionately dedicated to the exploration, development, and production of the Black voice.” I was speaking to the artistic director about audiences and his challenges in developing future audiences. He said that only approximately 20% of the audiences at his shows are people from the Caribbean and African communities in Toronto. After 15 years in existence, that number hasn’t changed much. He has worked with many schools in the city where there are largely diverse student populations. As with many theatre companies, developing future audiences, in addition to keeping your current ticket-buyers, is an ongoing challenge. It is another part of the discussion of diversity in theatre.
As for color-blind casting, the production we’re doing has two black actors in the lead roles, both of which were played by white actors in the Broadway production. Knowing the story, it makes perfect sense. A third of our cast is black. As someone who sees a lot of theatre, in various cities, I think that the opportunities for actors who are members of racial or ethnic minorities are very good these days.
@alwaysamom, I don’t want to thread-jack too much, but I’m seeing the production that you’re talking about tomorrow! So glad that my spring break lined up with it and that I came home in time to catch closing (especially since I have friends working on the show).
Lucky you, CanadianMTgirl. I saw it three times but had to miss the final show because we left today for our southern home . Would enjoy hearing your comments! PM me if you have a minute! Would love to know who your friends are.
I’m reading this a little late, but with much interest. My son is Japanese American and a few schools commented on his “look” when he auditioned last year. My daughter’s “look” was mentioned at almost every MT audition two years before that. One auditor even asked about her race directly and said 'I’m not supposed to ask you this but…" My daughter especially is often perceived as being Latina and both are often asked about their racial background. Like most of you, we didn’t see much diversity at college auditions.
Loved reading this casting notice for the Broadway auditions for Hamilton to take place later this month. The last line is each role description is brilliant.
