I’m a Asian-American student who in Southern California and Seattle, both places are pretty diverse and full of minorities. How will I fit in at UNC or in a southern state in general? I’m pretty far removed from those southern states and growing up you hear all sorts of rumors about the south being racist and what not, I doubt it’s true but I’d like to hear about the attitudes towards asians or minorites at unc
At our admitted students day we were told that the UNC undergraduate population has 31% “students of color.” The unscientific, “eyeball” view of the students on campus during the day suggested a pretty diverse student body. Whatever you perceive the racial attitudes in the South in general to be, UNC and Chapel Hill are fairly “progressive” as that term is commonly used.
Google “common data set” on the UNC website, and look under part B2 for specific numbers.
Would you really call Seattle diverse?
UNC has lots of white people, lots of black people, but not so many other ethnic groups.
Was on the UNC campus yesterday while helping to move my D home for the summer. The eyeball test confirms the data that the student body is diverse. This assessment coming from someone who has lived in NYC and Chicago, two diverse cities.
According to Fall 2015 data for undergraduates at UNC-CH:
Asian - 11.7%
Black - 8.2%
Hispanic - 7.7%
Female - 58.2%
Looks pretty diverse to me.
