Division I Athletics and Architecture

...must be very hard to do, but I read this article this morning highlighting a young man who is a top level track athlete and is a student in VT's architecture program. He, along with the other athletes in the article, are to be commended for all they are accomplishing. Just thought I would pass it onto students/parents out there who are interested.

Great article. As parents of students in the design majors, we all know the time demands and discipline required to be successful. Kudos to the student athletes who pursue these majors.

Another student athlete-design major and Heisman Trophy winner, Eddie George, received his degree in landscape architecture from Ohio State.

And then there is Andrew Luck, Stanford’s phenomenal QB. Can’t say I have been more impressed with a young man than I am with that kid. Coming back to school instead of bolting for NFL to earn his degree in architectural design. Wouldn’t it be neat to see a list of DI athletes who did major/graduate with a degree in architecture or arch related field?

I love what Andrew Luck represents, but Stanford has an architectural engineering major, not a real architecture major. So despite a substantial work load, he does not have to face four hour studios, three afternoons a week. This is what really makes athletics a challenge.

Andrew Luck is indeed the real deal. S knew him in HS through a mutual acquaintance.

rick12, thanks for pointing out the difference between arch majors and related majors, especially in regard to the long hours dedicated to studio work. Someone once told me that the one building on a college campus that will always have its lights on into the wee hours of the morning is the architecture/design building.

Here are a couple of other D1 and other notable athletes with design majors:
