I have been given some information about which one of my divorced parents should fill out my Fafsa, and I just want some confirmation to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.

According to studentaid.ed.gov, the parent who fills out the Fafsa is the parent with whom I've lived with more in the past 12 months. What I've been told is that even if I stayed with my mother (who I would like to fill out the Fafsa) just ONE more day than my father, she could fill it out for me. To be quite honest, I don't know 100% that I've stayed with her more than my dad. If necessary, my dad would let me stay with her a few extra days if it means getting more financial aid. My question is, am I doing anything wrong by getting her to fill out the Fafsa?

Check the websites of the colleges and universities on your list very carefully. Some will require the CSS Profile or their own financial aid paperwork. In that case, it is most likely that both parent’s financial information will be required.

Thank you! I’ve found a handful that require the CSS but don’t require the part of it where the noncustodial parent would have to fill out his information.

while many schools may not ask for a non-custoidal profile at the beginning of the process, they may ask for it later. Also. while some schools may not ask for the non-custodial profile, they may ask for their own form to be filled out by non-custodial parents.

for example:

Fordham will most likely ask for non-custodial profile information

Thank you guys for contributing! I’m looking to apply to GWU, UNC Chapel Hill, and Vanderbilt. I’ve checked with all of them, and they do NOT require noncustodial information.
