Do college interviews w/student also involve parent?

My son is doing his first interview at a college in a few weeks. Since he's never been through the process, I started wondering.....will they bring me in, too, to see if I have any questions? Should I be prepared with questions? Just wondering. I would think they would not, but I took son up to a pretty selective school on a weekday in May, and we were the only ones for the tour and info session, so info session admissions person said, "Well, since it's just the two of you, why don't we go into my office?" Then, he talked about the school and proceeded to basically give my son an interview, and also wanted to know what questions I had. Good thing we had done the tour first and had researched the school online before attending!!

The 3 or 4 schools where my son interviewed on campus, the admissions rep did come out afterwards to chat with us a bit and to see if we had any questions.

OP: it’s a courtesy b/c they are also wooing you at the same time. I’m an alumnus interviewer. If a parent picks up a student, I’m glad to meet them and offer to answer any pressing questions and concerns they might have as well. It’s good customer service.

Interviews during time when colleges are recruiting are informal and usually can include parents part or all the time (often family’s choice); recruiters know they are trying to impress not just the student but the parents also. Interviews required as part of admission process after student has actually applied should be attended only by student.

If you want to be prepared with questions, be prepared to ask about things like scholarships and financial aid, medical facilities, overall fees and costs, payment plans, food plans or other similar things which are usually of most interest to the parents but usually not explored by the student.

I’ll be prepared!

If the interview is evaluative, it’s best for the interviewer to be impressed with the student, not the parent. Whenever I talk with the admissions folks, I keep my conversations to a minimum and let my student shine.

I don’t know but I’ll have to have one of my parents with me on at least a few interviews, and both of them definitely on one - that’s just their requirements, though (my parents).

condor: it’s fine for your parents to accompany you. But when it’s time for you to spk with the interviewer, Mom or Dad are not welcome to be in the room/immediate area.

I (and I suspect most other interviewers) would view intrusive /helicopter parents as a huge negative. I’m glad to spk w/them after my private conversation with the student.

Plz make sure they know this.

Ooh… hopefully, intrusive parents won’t be an issue for me.
